those would have dropped out
had there been no strike. He said
to estimate the number of

year to attendance during the
same period in 1977.

many had quit, education in
Huron. He said some had
transferred ' to other 'school -
systems to' avoid missing classes
during the strike and some had,
applied' and, reeeived early
,admission into college or
university. He would not hazard a
guess as to how many actually
dropped out of school because of
the strike.
The superintendent said he was
• ,pleased" with the increase from
last Thursday, the first day of
school after the strike was settled:
He said many students were
working during the strike period
and chose to finish the week on
the job returning to school
Monday, He said others were ,
returning to Huron County
sehools from other systems and .
had taken the two days to make
thernove-:"''' " '""
"There's certainly not 54 more
people in the work force," he
said, ,
A head count the day after the
strike showed an' average
attendance of 90.0 ..,percent'.
Kenwell said 4,251-students were
in' the classrooms Thursday. A
school by school calculation
showed that no one school-
appeared to suffer excessive
student losses.
Figures Thursday showed 90.5
percent of the students at Central
Huron in Clinton returned, 9L4
percent returned 'to Wingham's
F.E. Madill, 90.6 percent were
back at Gederich District
Collegiate, 91.2 percent at
Seaforth and 90.9 percent at
South--14turon-in
Mr. Kenwell said a school by
school count Monday put 95.1
J percent 'of the students in Clinton
back in class, 96.3 percent
returned in Wingham, , 94.5
percent in Goderich, 90.5 percent
in Seaforth and 94.9 percent in
Exeter,
Mr. Kenwell said the atten-
dance Monday was 'very close to
"normal": coreparieg • those
figures to February 8, 1978. The
superintendent said he chose
February 8 because it was before
the first of the rotating strikes
that started the 31 day walkout
and that it seemed like a "normal
day". He said 96.3 percent of the
students were in class that day.
He said 950 of Clinton's 980
students returned: 1,149 of
Wingham's 1,175 were back, 959
of Goderich's 981, 362 of
Scaforth's 381 and 963 of Exeter's
1,004.
The superintendent said it was
not certain what, if any. moves
the board of education would
make to make up lost time over
the strike. He said the board had
:already cancelled March examie-
-alleitI -and-that move picked up
nine instructional days over last
year. He said time lost due to
winter storms this year compared
to last year was considerably less
and that options the board had
such as cancelling teacher
professional development days
and shifting find examination
timetables at the end of the school
year may permit, the students to
pick up more time in the
classroom. He said the 31 day
strike may not have resulted in 31
days lost .instructional time
compared to the 1976-77 school'
year.
Mr. Kenwell said no decision's
will be made 'on alterations of
school-talenclars without consul-
tation between the director of
education and the five school
principals. He' said he did not
want to continent on the possibi-
lities before -any 'decisions' were
made by the board. •

Murals of stitchery on burlap,
of fabric scraps, of tissue paper
and applique are among those
that Mrs. Mooney's classes have
made. But as Mrs: Mooney's
book says "I cannot give you a liSt
of all the ways of making mural
stories. Working out your own
ideas is themost fun of all." •
Miss Turnbull says that the silk
screen paintings that hang in the
hall at SPS were bought with
prize money-that Mrs. Mifitifie-y'S
students (she was Miss Savauge
then) won in art competitions at
the CNE,
Mrs. Mooney's northern
Ontario students are still winning
CNE prizes, although she
certainly doesn't emphasize the
art only as a way of winning
awards,
