DEBATE --Tie most interesting
meeting yet held by the literary and
debating society was that of last
Saturday evening, when every seat
in the Orange hall ' was occupied,
After a short programme, the election
of office's for the nest month took
place. All the old ()dicers were
elected by acclamation„ `Then
Messrs, Robert I3laek, John Spence
and Will Bailey were selected to
judge the merits, of the debaters on
the subject, "Resolved that the
franchise should be extended to
women, Miss Polly Duff led the
affirtuitive, assisted by Misses Bur-
detto McCracken and Jessie Robert-
son. Mr. Hovey Mcliardy led the
negative, assisted by Messrs. Wtn.
Fraser and James Breckenridge, but
as the last named gentleman failed
to appear, Mr. Fraser took a double
role. Every speech contained very
excellent matter and although the #
girl's had the best of it, the negative
brought up a great many points that
nobody could deny the truth of.
The two latter of the affirmitive did
very well, indeed, considering their
youth, being school girls in short
dresses. Their speeches showed
careful preparation and they scored
