Peck Appliances Stanley Township council has told Tuesday night, that recreational development should not expand beyond the 901)-acres it now occupies in the township. A crowd of about 130 attened the third workshop on the township's secondary plan, which will outline the township's Present and future land use. • The 900 ._ acres under recreational development represents 2,5 percent of the township's total 46,000., acres. Almost all of the land is located along the lakeshore, 90 percent of which is privately owned, with the rest being unusuable gully land, Huron County _planner George Penfold told the audience, Township farmer Phil Durand said the secondary plan should follow the Huron County plan which limits recreational deyelopment along the lake. He said a lot of good agriculture land located near the lakeshore must be protected from further development and suggested other sites be found for recreation. Farmer_Bey _ agreed that recreational development should be restricted but questioned whether the township's landfill site could support further development even it it was allowed. "We shouldn't allow any more vacant land to be developed recreational or .residential, until weve come, to grips with the garbage disposal problems. The Landfill site shouldn't be over burdened," he said. Township reeve Tom Consitt said thdlandfiltsite is designed to meet the township's needs for 20 years under' the present rate of development.. After several years of no population growth, clerk Mel Graham said the number of residents grew slightly in 1976 to just over 1,600 people. County planner George Penfold said he hoped some decision 'would be made on furhter cottage developinent along Lake Huron and that . regulations would be established as to how far back from the lake cottage development should be allowed. In some areas, cottages are in two and even three tiers, he said. When councillor Don Brodie suggested that tIo- furhter recreational development 'in the Huron County Council gave its nod to $161,125 in renovations to the exterior of the Huron Historic Jail ,in Goderich when they met last Thursday. The approval was little more than a formal go-ahead as the County will not be paying for any of the work to be undertaken but had been asked. for their approval because they are still the owners of the structure, Property Committee Chairman John Jewitt told the meeting that representatives of the -Historic Tail Board met with the Committee to discuss the study and report prepared by Nick Hill, entitled "A Plan for Restoration." That report was completed' for the, Jail Board at a cost of $2 ,000 The Seaforth •Lions Carnival township include no new trailer parks or campsites, a, few. people in the audience critisized Mr. Brodie and the council at large for its negative attitude toward the secondary plan. John McIntyre, owner of the Sugar Bush Inn who is presently expanding its facilities, told Mr. Brodie that. the council members "should not take such 'a negatiVe attitude towards these meetings." The general public should be feeding in its ideas on the secondary plan. Mr. McIntyre said, and council "should not be dictating ideas," The controversy over council's ' control on the meetings died down when Councillors Brodie and Paul Steckle both said that they were voicing their personal opinions on the plan, not those of the whole council at the workshops, Urban developemnt will be the theme of•-the next workshop in Varna Town Hall, Tuesday night. to enable accord i ng to a cBo otnypf hde nRsei ve eand Reeve e E d Oddleifson who is also the Jail Board secretary.
