If k seems' that Christmas iS
getting more elaborate every
year, we now have proof that it
just ain't so. A collection of early
Christmas cards-that belonged to
Mrs. Belle Hamilton, formerly of
Auburn, who died t is year at
102, has given us a' fascinating
glimpse into the history of the
Christmas card.
Her great granddaughter Rhea,
an employee of the Expositor, is
now the owner of the cards and
lent them to the Expositor to
illustrate our Christmas edition.
Christmas cards were smaller
early in this, century than they are
today. Some of those enlarged on
this page were originally only
three inches square. But they are
embossed, threaded wih ribbon
covered with gold lettering and
printed in lovely soft colours. •=
Many . of the earliest cards
aren't in the traditional red and"
green Christmas colours. Mauve,
gold and yellow -are equally
popular.
Cards with ethnic themes also
were popular. Several of Mrs.
Hamilton's cardshave an Irish or
Scottish theme. Horse shoes and
