New Years Day, In years agone

was one special day in a year not
a whole "season" to be enjoyed
as -we know it today. Therefore
there was no big layout or
Christmas newspaper issue, It
was a holiday confined more or
less to the privacy of individuals.

Christmas was not treated as
importantly in the Expositor 70
years 'ago as it is these days.
An old Christmas issue of the
Expositor was brought into the
office recently. It was found by
Mrs. Dorothy Engel, R.R.3,
Mitchell. Having just published a
Christmas issue of gift ideas and
suggestions, the old issue was
l000ked at carefully and critically
by the staff h ere. The date of
publication was December
28, 1906, three days after
Christmas.
At that time pictures were not
used in newspapers so the pages
looked pretty bare compared to
the issues of today. In the
Expositor's eight pages there was
only one article of Christmas
importance and that was a
sermon taken from the story of
the Nativity composed by a
minister from Los Angeles,
`California.
One ad that of Wm. Pickard
& Son was really seasonal. They
were still offering gift
suggestions.
The big item for Christmas was
a coon coat on special from $30.00
to $85.00. If you didn't want to go
that high you could purchase a
"Near Seal" coat for $26,50 or a
calf coat for $16.00.
On the opposite page a big ad
"Genuine January ,Sale" at
Stewart Bros. was feat ked. The
firm continues as 'a regular familiar to all of us like elyes, old
advertiser today. Their sale was a St. Nick, the singing"carolers or
