Huron County's elementary
school teachers and the County
Board of Education have agreed
on a 1976-77 contract that gives
the teachers an eight percent
raise. In addition, the dollar value
of a 1.7 per cent cost of living
allowirice has been added into
the salary grid, where it will
increase the total salary package
rather than being paid out in a
lump sum twice a year .
With the cost of living
allowance included in salary
figures, it looks as if elementary
teachers will be making more
than high school teachers with
similar qualifications.
However, G.O.Phillips,
executive assistant to Director of
Education John Cochrane said
this isn't so. The high school
teachers' contract specifies that
their L7 percent cost of living
allowance is to be paid separately
in two lump sums, rather than
being included in the salary grid.

salaries for elementary school
teachers with a year of teachers'
college and no university courses
will run from $9182 to $12,452,
compared to $8400 to $11,400 last
year.
Teachers with a university
degree will receive from $11,300
to $18,767 , up from $10,400 to
$17,100 in 197S. The higher
figure is what teachers with 10 or
more years of • experience will
receive and the lower figure is for
first year teachers.
Salaries in the top category run
from $13,520 to $24,014 , again
depending on teaching
experience and are up from
$12,400 to $21,900 from last year.
Principals' salaries will run
from $12,410 to $14,430 in the
lowest category to $25,830 to
$30,675 for the most highly
qualified elementary school
principals. Vice principals will
receive allowances above their
basic teaching salaries of $2800 in
their first year, $3,000 after a
year, $3200 after two years and
$3400 after three or more years.
Each of the allowances are
increased $200 over 1975.
Principals of schools for the
mentally retarded will receive an
allowance of $4250, up $250 from
last year, above their regular
teaching salaries.
In addition, the teachers have
agreed to a cut of one percent in
the Staff Improvement Fund, a"
reduction of about $76,000. The
board previously paid one and a
half percent of the total salary
package into the fund which
finances - Short courses for
teachers.
It's beer' 'cut to one half a
percent.
Co-ordinators are to receive
allowances above" their basic
teaching salaries of $4400 for
student services co-ordinator, up
from $4000 and $3400 up from
$3000 'for the co-ordinator of
, media centre services.

days and Joe 'came ght on by
train to Stratford:
The call to us was a request
that we come and pick him up at
the train station. He didn't have
warm enough "Clothes to hitchhike
and he didn't have enough money
to do anything else. But we didn't
feel much like leaving our warm
bed to drive to Stratford, 'even if
it was a pleasant surprise, so we
persuaded him to spend, the night
in a hotel and said we'd come and
We were glad to see him home
and shared his dismay at all the
snow on the ride back to
Seaforth. But his parents were
happier still. His dad was still in
bed when we,:arrived, but the
shock of seeing his youngest child
unexpectedly after all that time
got him up and dressed pretty
quickly.
And his mother's face was
something to see when she came
in from church and found him
sitting inside the dining room
door.
"Where's Maggie,?" she
wanted to know. "Under the
table", my husband the practical
joker replied and I. must admit
that she picked up a corner of the
tablecloth and looked.
Margaret phoned later and
she'll be home before long: But
it's Joe that we've noticed the big
changes in. He's quieter, more
mature. He says he's lived for so
long on so little, that he doesn't
need a whole lot of things
anymore. He doesn't ,even eat
very much anymore.

They are both big city bachelors
and they seem to call when

with our quiet settled lives, go to

Andy finally made, it downstairs
to answer and was greeted with a
jolly hello. To which he said
"who is this?" "Three guesses",
the caller said, and Andy, in no
mood for guessing when he'd
been awakened from a sound
sleep, prepared to hang up.
"It's Joe," the caller said,
obviously a lot more excited than
Andy was. "Joe who?" -my half
asleep husband asked. "Your
brother-in-law," the caller said,
And it was. One half of the
terrible two, who've been
travelling in Europe since
mid-July had arrived by train in
Stratford in the middle of the
night, hoping to surprise us all.
While all the• family here were
waiting to hear whether or not
