Russell Bolton, 75, of R.R. 1, Seaforth, who is the current Hay King, refuses to divulge any details of the secret. "It's a Huron County secret. I wouldn't want to put it in the paper for some other County to find out," he said. Part of the secret may be that Huron County has over 100,000 acres In forage crops, third in the province. Mr. Bolton did say though that it generally was a matter of cutting the hay at the right time and curing it properly. Mr. Bolton has been World Hay Champion for five consecu- tive years now winning in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, and 1976. In 1971, Russell Dallas of Brucefield was the Hay King for the third time, also winning in 1963 and 1969. Other Huron County champions were Robert Allan of Brucefield in 1958 and 1962; Wilber Keys of R.R. 4, Seaforth in 1964; and Robert Fothering- ham in 1965 and 1966. Mr. Bolton said his interest in hay competition went back about 25 years to when he was president of the Huron Soil and Crop Improvement Association. At that time he and Gord Bennett, then Huron County agriculture repre- Classitied Ads pay dividends. sentative and now deputy agriCUI• ture minister, decided to include hay in the annual seed fair competition. Mr. Bolton said he forgot about hay coimpetifion until he was congratulating Russell Dallas on his-win in 1971. "He said, 'lam not going to try anymore. You're going to try and I'm going to nelp you." Mr. Bolton has been champion- ing ever since. He says he enjoys the competi- tion as it gives him a chance to meet people from across the country and around the world. In 1970 a farmer from Ohio won the competition. Mr. Bolton isn't sure if he will use the secret to bring the Stars (Continueu arum Page 13 Dave Longsiaff and John Nash all scored twice for the Stars.
