They plan to serve refreshments

remaining stock to Toronto where
they will be displaying at the
Canadian Craft Show.
The production of pottery is a
complicated process and a
successful potter must have the
skills of a designer, a technical
knowledge or ceramic engineer.

A pot starts its life as a lump of
clay, usually blended for certain
characteristics. The lump is
wedged or kneaded then cut into-
pieces for throwing. Each piece is
rilaced on the flat disc that is the
head of the potter's wheel. Using
water to lubricate the clay, the
potter then centres it on the wheel
head, and draws.the clay up with
the fingers. After the desired
shape is achieved, the potter cuts
the pot from the wheel head using
a fine wire or string. The piece is

For years the fleeChwood More
stood empty and. neglected.
Modern technology had made it
possible for -farmers to travel
quickly and easily into town for
supplies, mail, food and dry
goods, leaving the old country
store to fall into lonely disuse,
Addy McPhee and Robert Totu
were two people in search of a
home in the country. It had to be a
very special home, with a little
land, a lot of character and space
for them to work and develop
their talents as potters.
When the two saw Beachwood
for the first time, it was love at
first sight. The store had
adequate living quarters that still
had the'charm of its early Ontario
heritage and plenty of room for a
pottery studio.
They moved in from Toronto
during the spring of 1975 and still
recall the warm concern and
friendliness of their neighbours.
