A Seaforth couple travelled
across Lake Huron from Bayfield
to Port Sanilac, Michigan 'On
Saturday in their' 25 foot power
boat. It was suCh a good
experience that Marilyn Chesney
Says he and her husband Glen
would do it again.
The ChesneyS were accom-
panied by another boat from
Goderich on the 38 mile trip and
planned to meet another group of
9 boats frOm Grand Bend in the
middle of the lake. 'They didn't
but they saw a large freighter
about five miles from Sanilac. The
Grand Bend group arrived in
.Sanilac about a half hour before
them.
All the boaters stayed in
Sanilac, which Mrs, Chesney
called "a lovely little town",
overnight• and travelled back
'across the' .lake together on
Sunday.
"We would never do it alone",
in case something happened to
the boat, Mrs. Chesney said, but
they felt safe on the two and a half
hour trip. The boat is equipped
with a CB radio, which isn't much
good' unless there's -another boat
with a CB nearby.
They plotted their trip with
maps.and a compass. and though
they' had no ship to shore radio
they were only about two miles off'
•
their destinatiOn when they ar-
rived.
"It was misty when we left
Saturday morning and we' lost
sight of land quite early:" she
said. They travelled across the
lake on a slight sourthern angle.
A lady in Sanilac told Mrs.
Chesney that she'd been in a
sailing race from there over to the
Canadian side and arrived after
eight hours. Mrs. Chesney thinks
she'll stick to the power boat and
the two "and a half hour trip.

GRAND CHAMPION AT FLOWER SHOW — Mary
Haugh, right, of Brucefield was over all champion,
winning the most points in the Horticultural
Society's flower show on Wednesday. Mrs. Haugh,,
who is 76, has been an avid gardener since she was.
five years old and a neighbour lady gave her five
hyacinth bulbs. 'Mrs, Haugh is known around the
area for her beautiful garden at her home and has
helped many novice gardeners get started with
transplants, from her own• flower beds. President of
the society, Isobel Scott, presented Mrs. Haugh with
a crystal vase. (Staff Photo)
