St. Col- umban were missing 5 of their regular • players and played the whole game without ,benefit of substitution. Along with this, goal-tender Frank Verberne was forced to play forward because of a hand injury and Loui Arts substituted in goal.. However, despite these diatiOantages St. Cialumban.completely outplayed •the opposition and only bad luck prevented them from winning easily. Columban opened, quickly 'and hit the crossbar twice in the .opening 10 minutes. However, Oakridge grabbed the lead as a pass back frail a defender to goalie,,Uui Arts, went astray and pan Oakridge player kicked it into the open net. Last Wednesday evening saw Mainstreet struggle to a hard earned win over the Turf Club to move up as they played their rained out contest Main- street won by an 10-8 score. Mondays action saw the Fire- men have only one bad inning but almost blow the game' as they nipped the Teachers by a narrow 8-7 score. The Firemen started strong holding the Teachers scoreless for two innings while shoving across 4 runs to open a 'good lead. However the Teachers had a big third inning scoring 'seven runs on only five hits ' as they took over the lead. • The Firemen came back with a single marker in their half of the inning and the game became tight. • After a scoreless fourth the srnokeaters moved back to within one run as they counted a single marker on George Reeves triple. The sixth inning again saw the Teachers held scoreless but the Firemen moved back in front. Don Hulley's triple scored two runs to give the srnokeaters the lead again. . The final inning saw the Teachers again fail to get a rally started as they managed to get only one man on base. -Jim Glew went the distance for the Firemen allowing just eight hits, One for extra bases, as the Firemen continue to play well in the field. HoWard James took the loss but pitched well as he allowed only nine hits -but his teammates committed eight errors and al- lowed several unearned runs. Queen's First The late contest at the Optimist Park saw the Queens move into a first place tie as they hung on for • a 15-9 .win over' a faltering Turf Club. The Turf Club had trouble in the early- innings allowing the Queens to build up a big lead. The 'Turf, opened a 3-2 'first inning lead but' the ,Queens moved in front to stay in the second inning scoring four un- earned runs as they didn't get a hit but opened a 7-4 lead. The third inning also saw four runs cross the plate for the Queens as errors and walks continued to hurt the Turf?' The fourth inning saw both teams start to use the bats as the Queens added threel more runs. The Turf finally got untracked and replied with four to leave the Queens up 13-8 after four co* plete innings. The Turf Club failed to mount much of, an offensive attack after this point and the Queens coasted to their sixth victory. (by Ken) At the Goderich raceway.
