Craft Show on in
Stratford this week
The fifth annual Festival of
Arts and Crafts is being held July
9th. 10th and 11th in the Stratford
Arena ,sponsored by the
Volunteer Committee of The
Gallery/ Stratford. Craftsmen
from all over Canada will be
displaying and selling their
wares. The Festival is designed to
give an outlet for Canadian
Craftsmen to display and sell
their work and to bring the public
into personal contact with
talented working craftsmen and
artists. Between six and eight
thousand people attended the
Festival last year.
For many of the craftsmen the
Festival provides a unique and
important opportunity - allowing
them a good medium for the sale
of their work as well as a chance
to meet the public who buy their
crafts. For many of the artists this
can be important financially as
well. Many visitors to the Festival
keep up their initial contact with 'a
craftsman or artist and continue
to buy his or her works: Many of
the artists live in remote areas
witl little access to • shops and
stores in urban centres of the
country. Festivals such as this
provide a focal point for the
distribution of their wares,
Conversely for the public the
Festival provides that rare
opportunity to meet an artist and
discuss his craft with him - in
some cases to watch as he
demonstrates his skills.
At this year's Festival Gail ,Ord
and Sue McCoy from Toronto will
demonstrate patchwork and
quilting. Martina Baas from
Wyoming, Ontario will display
cross-stitch pictures and
demonstrate her craft. Quillwork,
a unique and interesting craft will
be displayed by Margaret
Crozier. Pat Gutowski from
Caledon will display her
Ceramics and beads and jewellery
and will also demonstrate. Robert
Lyons, well known to previous
Festival visitors will m ake his
famous hand-made brooms
during the Festival. And many
many more - 85 artists in all.
