Since house painting can appear to be a m onstrous job, there are simple, step-by-step procedures that should be followed to make the job as easy and as permanent as possible. Remove any loose paint from the siding with a wire brush and a putty knife. Sand it to remove any rough edges and use a spot primer on all bare wood. Worn-out boards should be replaced and you should nail down loose siding. When you do this you must set the nail heads into the wood and fill the holes with putty. Be sure to put a primer coat on all bare wood surfaces. Pay special attention to wood that contains knots. Sap knots will bleed through 'your paint if they're not properly treated. A heavy coat ,of orange shellace will prevent sap from bleeding through. , Before any paint is applied all surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned. Paint will not bond to a dirty surface. A wire brush will remove most dirt and loose paint. Special cleansers are avilable to wash down the siding to remove contamination like dust, cobwebs and any bird or, insect droppings. Be sure to rinse well after using these cleansers. Check joints around chimneys, &ors and window frames and if necessary recaulk them. First scrape away any old, dried-out 23' Bus. The caulking must get right into the cracks to do any good. Windows and frames shotild be well cleaned before you apply the putty.' Paint surfaces can build up a chalky or calcium-like residue that may not even be visible to you. This must be cleaned off or the new paint will not bond properly. Humid weather will react on these areas and cause the paint to blister. There are two types of primer you will need for your home. One is an exterior oil primer for all wood surfaces. For a smooth finish it should be sanded af ter it dries. The other type is ,g alvanized primer for eavestroughs, downspouts, chimney flashing and any areas where the paint has peeled off of a galvanized. metal surface. These areas should be washed — a vinegar solution will do — to remove the flux build-up. After all this preparation the only thing left to do is paint and the job will be •easier, better lheking and longer lasting if you use good quality materials. A good quality brush with long, .4-- full, tapered bristles will do the best job. It will last longer and apply the paint better than a cheap brush. There are two types of house paint — acrylic latex and alkyd (oil). Latex paint is designed' to let the surface breathe. It allows moisture to pass through, which can help prevent blistering and peeling. . Painting? Prepare first
