A total of. about $600 worth of awards — medals, trophies and ribbons — were provided by district 31 of the Knights of Columbus who say they are willing to help again next year; Top athletes from the meet were,. from the left, rear: Denise Connelly of R.R.3, Goderich, junior girl; Jeff Dennomme of Goderich, junior boy; Margaret Wouters, R.R.1, St. Pauls, intermediate girl; Mike Schefter, R.R.1, Sebringville, intermediate boy; front, Linda McCarthy, 84 Norfolk SL, Stratford, senior girl; and Joe Van Bakel; R:R.2, Dublin, senior boy. About 360 youngsters participa ted in the meet. St. Columban controlled the play for most of the game and except for some fine saves by the Goderich goaltender the score could have been higher. B rian Murray scored with 20 minutes gone in the 1st half, putting a hard shot into the-top of the nel from eighteen yards out.The rest of the half was rather scrambly and Goderich had their best chances of the ga'me. Goalie Frank Verberne had to be especially quick on a couple of Goderich .hrsAks up the middle. However, in the Second half, the defenCe, anchored by , Neil Murray, never allowed the Goderich forwards to get, "" -anyWhere and continually started §t. Columban 'on rushes of their own. Midway in the half, Brian , Murray got his second goal, directing in a cross from , Casey Van Bakel. Then, with less than 5 minutes to play, V anBakel scored Seaforth beat Hullett Public to take the title of the boys' division in an invitational ball tournament at Clinton Public School lastweek. The .girls' division saw Huron Centennial win over Calvin Christian who beat Clinton Separate. The girls' Seaforth team won over Blyth in their final game to become consolation winners. Participating schools were Huron Centennial, Seaforth, Clinton Public, Hullett, Blyth, Clinton Separate and Calvin Christian Public School. Game time ft 2 p.m. ti •Y M Awards. . 4 e Each of the graduates was presented with a graduation pin provided by the Catholic Women's League of the Parish and a graduation class photo- graph provided by the Parent Teacher's Association. Academic awards for the Top Boy and Top Girl were won by Joe Van Bakel and Denise Lane. Marie Melady presented the- Marie Melady trophy for ehe Most Improved Student to Mary Jane Visser. 'The Louise Murray Memorial Award fOr the most courteous Grade Eight student play with children in other grades. Bicycle Rodeo On Tuesday, June 22; all pupils in grades five to eight were invited to participate in the Bike Rodeo. Two constables from, the O.P.P. were at school to help check each child's bicycle for road worthiness. Each child took a 'written test as well as participating in bicycle maneuvers out on the asphalt parking lot. We hope this will lead to happy and safe cycling this summer. • School Trips The grade'eight class, accomp- anied by Mr. Mathers, Mr.. Jeffery, Mrs. McKinley and Mrs. Moffat, journeyed by train to Ottawa in May, to visit the Parliament Buildings, and other places of interest. While there, they met and spoke with our own member of" Parliament, Robert McKinley. The kindergarten class visited Storybook Gardens in London in early June. The two grade one classes visited the Grand Bend Zoo. and Joan Sills both hit home runs. The next garde lost was against Stratford with a score of 27 - 1. Susan Nigh hit 'a home 'run. On June 27 Seaforth lost to Mitchell with a score of 9-0 Mary Lynn Glew pitched •her first • game and she did quite well and Pia Marcuson played excellent centre field catching- a number of fly balls. Supporters' hope that the team will return to normal and start winning their games. Our next home games are on: July 9 at 7:00 and July 16 at 7:00 BOth of these games are at the Rec. Please come out and support the team by attending our games and buying tickets for our grocery draw which will be drawn at the end of the week. Early in the second half St. Columban nearly .tied the score as Gord Dick's head b all went just-over the net. 'With. 25 minutes to play St. Th tunas went up.by 2 - 0 when a shot from 25 yards out went over Verberne's head and dropped in just under the crossVar. St. Columban narrowed the lead to 1 goal less than 5 m mutes later as Casey Van Bakel's sharp angle shot from the left side glanced off the goaltender into the net. When the game got down to the last 5 minutes , St. Columban pushed virtually everyone to the attack to try and get the equalizer. This left the defence understaffed and. St. Thomas took advantage of this to score their 3rd goal. In all, St. Columban played The Huron-Perth Roman. Catholic. Separate School Track Meet was. held at Mitchell High School, June 22. Joe Van Bakel of St. Columban won the trophy for best boy athlete-in the 13 and over age group. The awards for the competition which involved students from all 19 schools in the system were provided by the Knights of Columbus: Graduation ceremonies for the grade 8 class at St. Columban School were held in the pariSh hall June 24. On Saturday, St. Columban played in a City Cup game inSt. Th omas against their 1st Division team. St. Thomas won 3 1 in what was a superb display fo soccer by both sides. Playing against a team with virtually no weak spots and far more experience, St. Columban were in the thick of the game right u until St.Thomas' third goal, which was scored with less than 2 minutes to play. St. Th omas opened the scoring in the first half, their centre forward banging in a rebound from 3 yards out. P. OILERETTES On Wednesday,' June 16 the Oilerettes and Dublin played an excelfe t soccer and. stayed in the game right to the, last despite the fact they were missing key players and had only substitute. Everyone turned in a -strOng4gaine, particularity Brad Finlayson and Loui Arts. As this was presented to Henrietta beWit brbo4nic Murray, The Dublin and District Lions Club award for the Hardest Working Boy and Girl went to Stephen Menheere and Margo Kale. Margo Kale also received the St. Columban School Sportsmanship Award. The annual award given by the K. of C., Seaforth Council, to the top boy and girl in Grade 8, in each school within the council area St. Columban School, went to Denise Lane arid Joe Van Bakel, presented by Thos. Murray. -0- • Spring weather came to us early at Easter, then left just as quickly. The poor weather seriously hampered our track and field practices, but grades six, seven and eight were able to have house league softball. Our area 'track and field meet was held at the Seaforth High -School, Wednesday, June 2, to which we 'sent ninety-seven competitors, chosen at our own school meet. Everyone tried their best and liad• an enjoyable day. For softball houseleagues, 'we played 2-3-4-, a pleasant change from -the real thing. Each team supplied their own pitcher and we were allowed 2 outs. 3 strikes or 4 pitches. This way everyone was able to get a hit and it gave us practice in our fielding skills. On the 17th of June, Clinton Public School hosted the area softball tournament. Both our boys' and our -girls' teams played very well. The girls were declared winners when they won all their games, Primary and Junior grades had separate play days on Friday afternoon, June 18. There was' plenty .of exciting competition at - each of the stations. The different games are fun. You also get to exciting' game of ball in- Dublin. Dublin won the game 7 - 6.
