PUC decides
town can use
bockhoe
at cost
A sometimes heated discussion
over arrangements for the Town
council to use a yet to be
purchased PUC back-hoe and
truck arose at last Wednesday's
PUC meeting with PUC Chairman.
Ed Daly wondering if -"council
still thought the PUC was "public
enemy number one."
The PUC has decided to buy a
back-hoe at a cost of $17.950 from
a dealer in Zurich and hopes to
purchase a truck from Parkhill at
a cost of around $7,500. Last week
the Mayor told council that the
PUC thought an, agreement might
be worked o'ut for the town to rent
the equipment from the PUC
instead, of from a private
contractor as they do now.
Mr. Daly suggested that
council should pay the same rate,
to the ?LT as they do to a'private
contractor, now $18 per hour, but
Mayor Betty Cardno disagreed.
"Contractors . are. making a
profit and I don't intend the PUC
to make a profit off the town,"
she said. "There would bench
advantage of dealing with the
PUC".
"Is yorincil still sitting on the
idea the PUC is public enemy
number one? Do they expect us to
run at a loss?" asked Mr. Dalyts.
Mayor Cardno replied that she
did not expect the PUC to run the
back-hoe or the truck at a JOSS for
council, but reiterated that she
didn't expect them to run it at a
profit either. It was finally
decided that $10 per hour would
be a reasonable fee for the town
to 'pay plus the cost if a man to
operate it.
Mr Daly also suggested that
there should only be a PUC
operator on the back-hoe and that
council would have to pay the
PUC rate of wages for the
operator. However Walter Scott,
PUC manager disagreed.
"As far as the truck goes
anyone should be able to operate
it. If the town has a chap capable
of operating the back-hoe then I
don't think there should be any
problems," he said.
The Commission finally
decided that if there was a
capable man from either the town
or theeRIN,elther could operate
it. The matter was left to the, next
meeting to work out the terms for
town ,,use. of the equipment.
