Canada is "sponging off the
international 'community" by
benpfitting from medical rese atch

research, lung disease researdhq,-
Dr.. Michael New house charged
at the annual meeting of the
Huron Perth Lung Association in
Seaforth Wednesday night.
Dr. Newhouse, who is director
of the respiratory disease unit at
St. Joseph's Hospital, Hamilton
told more than 100 members of
the . Association that medical
research isn't a high priority with
the federal gaoveroment.
The doctor apologized for
making a "political" speech but
urged his audience to protest
cutbacks and freezes in research
money with letters to the Prime
Minister, to Health Minister
Marc Lalonde and local MPs.
It costs Canada ab out $250,000
to train a good medical scientist,
and once trained researchers
often leave for jobs in the United
States where they have job
security, he said.
Cigarettes are 30 or 40 times as
dangerous as industrial pollution
Dr. Newhousa said as he urged
the lung organization to keep up
their fight against smoking. A
smoker who breathes Seaforth's
clean air is worse off than a
non-smoker who works every day
in Hamilton's coke ovens, he
, said.
His group is looking for ways to
keep asbestos particles out of the
apd to fight other industrial
diseases, Dr. Newhouse said.
Other research allows doctors to
detect lung damage before. the
patient feels at all impaired. "We
can clete.etabnormalties early and
warn people to stop smoking,"
•Dr. Newhouse said. "But usually
they don't stop, they say 'no I feel
fine,."
Researchers have discovered
that aerosols that asthmatics use
are 50 times more effective if they
are breathed in slowly and quietly
for two- minutes rather than
breathed in quickly, Dr.
Newhouse said. Research has
saved ` millions by finding that
expensive positive pressure
machines price used to deliver
aerosols don't make them much
more effective, he told the
Association.
Pointing to highland dancer
Janet Lemmon of Stratord who
entertained at the dinner meeting
and had a spell of coughing, after
her dance Dr. Newhouse said
highland dancing could perhaps
be introduced as another
Association project. People who
get a lot of exercise can clear their
lungs better than others, he said.
Seaforth dancer Angela
Andreassi also entertained at the
meeting' which was chaired by
HPLA president Eileen O'Brien
of Stratford. The group's
executive council was returned
for a second one year term.
Perth County Warden Ed
Doerr told the group that his
county council had banned
smoking at council meetings.
Huron's Warden, lack
McCutcheon brought greetings
from his county .
Honorary -treasurer H. W.
Bartman of Stratford said the
group's bank balance of
$17,721.11 should be closer to
$38,000 to start the 1974 financial
year. Christmas seal contri-
butions were down 2.8 per cent in
1975 to $38,351.55. The mail
strike interupted the campaign.
The Association spent just over
$14,000 on education; $4,557.02
on rehabilitation and social
services; $2,388.13 on adminis-
tration and gave more than $4000
each to the Canadian and Ontario
TB associations.
Lung Association vice
president David Schenck of
Seaforth presented a gift to
retiring executive council
member Art Goodwin of
Stratford. Ralph Goren of
Stratford who also retired was
unable to be present.

In Canada the second week in
May is National Week for the
Mentally Retarded. It's a' time
when focus is drawn to the
tremendous advances these
formerly forgotten Canadians are
now making through positive
training programs. '
The campaign-is symbolized, by
the •Flowers of Hope, the bright
yellow packet of seeds. Mrs.
Donna Greb, Zurich, chairman of
the local -campaign says that the
1976 goal is $8,000, a realistic
objective, she comments, in view
of the 75 results and the increased .
awareness of the work of the local
association.
All donations stay in the
community to support the:
projects of the area organization.
Trainees at, ARC Dashwood
supported by the catnpaign now
- total 41. They are bused to
Dashwood five days a week from
an area encompassing Arkona,
Egmondville and Londesboro.
At this adult rehabilitation
- centre, the trainees learn to
develope the talents they possess
and become capable, where
possible, of engaging in gainful
employment either in the open
market or in a workshop
environment.

Church, the Association is now
involved as well in a residence
housing four adults and a
counsellor. This is its most recent
project and 'one that was assisted
by area citizens with time,
materials and furnishings.
The program at the residence is
to foster a home-like, situation so
that the residents may develope
social and housekeeping' skills '
that may lead them to a less
structured • type of
accommodation.
The first project of the Associa-
tion was Huron Hope School at
JAD McCurdy, Huron Park. In.
1969 the Board of Education took
over _.the administration.
, In 1969 a pre-school nursery
was organized. It is located at
Alhambra Hall south of Grand
Beid. Teachers are Mrs. Joan
Smith and Mrs. Nely Van
Engelen. The youngsters receive
special academic and physical
training.
This year the Flowers of Hope
seeds are giant sunny marigolds.
Plant them in your; garden to
remind yourself that you helped
the Mentally Retarded Associa-
tion help others. who just might
