Port Hope couple
buy Stedmans -store
Don and Pat Dei hton looked at
Seaforth carefully before they
made the decision to buy the
Stedman franchise here. They are
here now. with a grand
re-opening scheduled for
Stedman's today, because they
liked what they saw.
.Don. who was a bank manager
in Port Hope, says he always
wanted to have his own business.
The couple looked around at other
towns and other busineSses
before deciding to settle here.
Pat gays the first time they
came to Seaforth in January they
were impressed with the ,curliag.„
rink and the golf club. Seaforth
seemed to have 'lots of
recreational activity and be a
good place to bring up children.
The Deightons have four
daughters, One works in
Kitchener, another is finishing
high school in Port Hope and the
'tiro youngest, Kathy and
Barbara. 13 and 11 are here with
their parents.
"One day we got stuck and two
women helped push our car out."
Don says and this incident also
impressed thein. Pat, who works
full time in the store. says she's
found Seaforth- people very
friendly.
The family lives on North Main
Street.
The Deightons have been here
for two months, working 16 and
18 hours a day at the store while
major 'renovations have been
going on. The 'store has been
open throughout the building
program and the couple says
customers have been under-
stan'ding "walking over
lumber" and generally putting up
with confusion while the work was
going on.
It's finished now and the store
is changed inside and out.
Besides a new front and display
windows. store counters have ,
been turned around and ,now run
the length of the store. There is
more display space altogether
and things look brighter.
The Deightons say they are
learning more about the business
all the time ... "a lay person
doesn't really realize what's
involved." The store stocks a full
variety of items. including
chirping budgies and fish. Right
now the Christmas stock is
coming in. making the opening an
especially busy time.
The opening today features
give aways and draws on a TV
and a tape recorder. The newly
renovated store has two cash
desks for faster service and the
same employees are staying on
with the Deightons.
Pat and Don say their
daughters are enjoying Seaforth
and getting involN ed in things
here. After Christmas when they
have rime, their parents hope to
do some curling. After all, the
curling club was one of the things
they liked about Seaforth in the
first place.
The Deightons are both natives
of Pembroke. They've ,lived in
small towns before, when Don
was in the bank, and also spent
allout 10 years in the Montreal
area. Both say they prefer small
towns.
