(By Nancy Andrews)
Many newcomers, travellers
and even some of the old-timers
must find the multitude of store
hours in Seaforth frustrating and
confusing.
The majority of downtown
stores are open from nine to six.
There are just enough stores that
regularly close at '5:30 or lock up
early to bug the last minute
shopper.
You just have one item to get,
you check your watch, fifteen
minutes to the good you, think as
you park the car. Then the sign
hits you right between the eyes,
closed.
It's closed but a notice says it's
open until six. The shopper
returns home, thinking "what did
1 db to deserve this?"
Many local merchants say they
are usually open until six, but if
it's a slow day, they might leave
early.
Perhaps more annoying for
folks is when they are in town to
do their grocery sh4apping, and
just want to browse around, - and
go to enter a store, only to see a
sign "Gone for Lunch".
Many of businessmen were
quite adamantly againsts noon
hour closings.From all indications
there is no shortage of shoppers
at this time of the day.
As one man said: "Stores
should be open at noon, it's good
for business." Some people work
in factories, eat a quick lu, nch,
and come downtown to get
something. For many people who
work, lunch hour is the only time
they can shop.
Although each store has
varying numbers visiting their
establishments at different times,
throughout the day, there doesn't
seem any reason why a place with
two workers couldn't stagger
lunch hours and be available to
would-be shoppers throughout
the noon-hour.
Everyone knows the frustration
of phoning an office, and getting
a. busy signal. Staggering lunch
breaks could be a real service to
people.
How often have we wandered
down the, street to talk to some
local businessman, only to
remember too late, that it was
Wednesday?
A local variety store owner said
Wednesdays. were just another
day of the week, and he sees no
slack in business. His chsfomers
are equally town and out-of-town
people.
AU open or all closed
Many people wish either all the
stores, could be oien or all closed
because they find &is half and
half plain confusing.
Strangers are really irritated
when they drive into town
Wednesday to find half the stores
open and half closed. Of course,
the one they want to visit is
closed.
A new buginess in town stay:
open on Wednesday. The tome
said he'll stay open- as long as i
pays.
He said at first they were
closed Wednesday morning, bu
when they returned from getting
stock, they always had a numbe
of customers.
He said it pays to hire part-time
help so he and his wife can go an(
get stock on Wednesdays
Getting part-time help wasn't
problem for him because he go
over 60 calls to a two weel
advertisement.
One store owner said he h
seriously thinking of staying °per
on Wednesday, at least unti
noon. There are a lot of people
around on Wednesday, he said.
"Wednesday closed" is almos.
a tradition with some
storekeepers. They would hate te
lose their day off and ask don's
business people need a day
off?Sure they do but part-time
help' can be a solution to many
stor es. If a place has more than
two workers, the days off can be
staggered.
If variety stores, and tjne
grocery stores find it financially
expedient to stay open and people
come M shop on those days,
surely they would sb op in the

Oone for lunch, closed Wed
oth,er stores as weir.
One shop owner said about ten
years ago the town was open half
a day on Wednesday. Finally this
was changed to closing for the
whole day. One man said they
found there wasn't. ehough
business to fill' a peg-shooter.
One grocery store owner said
he hasn't noticed a difference in
the volume of customers on
Wednesdays compared to
Mondays and Tuesdays.
It is a well known fact, that
when all stores are open they all
do better, he said. Store hours
should be based on whatever
suits the public, given labor
restraints.
In New YorkCity, he said,
grocery stores started 24 hour
service and found the peak
demand marimi mac 1 a m Cfrma
diitorveages shopper.
Owners have to use reason, he
said.
Most merchants agreed that
Wednesday closing w s pretty
well accepted by the lo al area,
although it might upset the
people who are just passing
through town, and stop to look
around. As One man said, there
really isn't much of that in
Seaforth area, Clinton has much
more since it is on two highways.
Everyone sympathizes with the
one man operation who can't
afford to hire someone special to
run the store on his day pff.
If business is less than boOming
on Wednesdays, it is probably
because many avoid the
downtown like the plague. They
don't know what is open and what
is closed, and don't want to take
the chance of fin/lino the store
'vc•
closed, and having to return
another day.
Several store owners favored
returning to the Wednesday
morning store hours. People are
used to shopping Wednesday
morning, but-have never shopped
in the afternoon.
The confusion for consumers
increases when a h oliday comes
along. Some stores that, are
normally closed are open because
of the Monday holiday while
others stay closed.
One businessman went as fir
as to say that "open Wednesday"
appears to be the coming thing in
Seaforth.
The advantages of a six day
business week include shopping
convenience, more work for
part-time labor, and less
cqnfusion for all of. us.
