WHY C N'T WE BE FRIENDS? — Johnny Segeren,

Ausable flood maps not
controversial, manager
The Ausauble Bayfield
Conservation Authority came to
council Monday night to explain
what they are doing and how
membership in the 1,000 square
mile authority benefits Seaf orth.
Seaforth is in a fairly unique
situation, A-B resources manager
Roger Martin said, because the
town is in tw,o conservation
authorities, Maitland Valley and
his own.
Mr. Martin said that flood plain

maps for his authority are coming
October and shouldn't provoke
as much opposition as the flood
plain maps of the MVCA Wave in
part of that authority. Residents
of some MVCA municipalities
have objected to the criteria used
to establish a flood plain.
Mos of downtov Brussels,
for example, is in a rlood plain
area and development there will
be restricted unless criteria are
changed.
Mr. Martin said few Ausauble-
Bayfield municipalities have
development along their rivers.
"'We're catching most before
development 'happens", he said.
A munici ality can't accept or
reject the d plain maps, but
hopefully will incorporate them
into existing plans, he
said. Citizens groups in the
MVCA area, have appealed to
Natural Resources Minister Leo
Bernier to change the criteria
used to da the mapping there.
Mr. Martin said that the
Authority could help establish a
green belt along Silver Creek,
through town in the future. There
used to be a walking trail along
the Bayfield River niEgmondville,
Reeve John Flannery
commented.
Mr. Martin said that he could
see doing clearing, tree trimming
and cleaning up debris if a trail
were to be re-established.
Mayor Cardrio said that she
has sometimes felt that Seaforth
gets little from participation in
the Authority
