At the Rec. Rounds the Main
Street nine had their hands, full
but came through to move into
sole possession of second place
with a 9-5 win over the lowly
Queens. Main Street had diffi-
culties throughput in keeping the
Queens down.•
The ,Queens showed signs that
they're not going the be any
pushover in the playoffs so it
could be really interesting come
playoff time.
The real excitement came in
the late contest as the Turf Club
had to pull out all stops to
narrowly nip the Travellers by an
18-15 score.
The game proved a real see-

upset last Monday caused a real
jam-up in the fniddle of the
standings,.
The upset came in the early
*game at the Lion's Park as the
Firemen handed a short-handed
Texaco squad an 11-6 defeat. The
Firemen opened a second inning
lead and w ere never threatened
as the Duffers just didn't have it.
The Duffers managed thirteen
hits including a home run by Bob
Dinsmore but with a man short in
the field couldn't muster much
git defense.
The, Smokeaters picked up
sixteen hits including a double by
Tom Phillips and two doubles by
Don Hulley. Ron Beuerman went
the distance for the Duffers while
Don Higley had the mound duties
for the Firemen.
The win moved the Firemen
into sole posession of sixth place
and dropped the Duffers into a tie
for third, with the Village.
The late contest saw the Village
move into a third place tie with
Texaco when they whipped the
Teachers by a convincing 18-6
count. The game was never in
question as the VilWge took
control early and were never
threatened.

from the long ball as Bill Price hit

St. Columban
beats St:Thomas
St. Columban scored once in
each half to defeat the St. Thomas
Legionaires "B" Soccer Club this
past Sunday in St. Columban. The
score could have been much
higher, but once again the locals
missed on many excellent scoring
opportunities.
Scoring for St. Columban were
Gord Moylan and Paul Coyne, the
first goal coming off a corner kick,
and the second a blistering free
kick by Coyne from just outside
the 18 yard line.. ,
Next game is this coming
Sunday, August 17 when St.
Columba!) hosts the Strathroy
Soccer Clqb.
On Monday,, August, 4, St.
Columban participated' in the
Clinton Centennial Soccer Tourn-
ament along with Clinton, Goder:
ich, Stratford, London Lions and
London St. George. All teams
except St. Coluifiban and Goder-
ich are 2nd Division, teams.
. St. Columban won their first
game of the day, downing Clinton
1-0 with Paul Coyne getting the
goal. The second game was lost
1-0 to London St. George. St.
Columban dominated the whole
game but again missed many
chances to score while the London
Club scored on their only danger-
ous attack of the game.
In the semi-final game Strat-
.., ford, the eventual tournament
winners downed St. Columban
1-0 overtime. St. Columban had
scored two goals in regulation
time but both were called back for
being offside. From the"reaction
of players and fans it seemed
quite unlikely that the 2nd goal
was offside.
