The Huron Expositor, 1975-06-26, Page 66agreed by a large majority to bring a hydro service to the town. The vote, on August 7, 1910 was 370 for and 42 against the introduction of a publically owned hydro system. There were 23 rejected ballotts. In 1910, Dr. Harburn recalled; the flour mill in Seaforth needed more power than the steam plant could supply. Mayor McCallum. who was manager of the mill and Councillor J. F. Daly who had read about Sir Adam Beck's plan to take hydro to places in Ontario and wrote him for information. Dr. Harburn, who met Sir Adam twice when he came to Seaforth, called him aman of genius and vision: Dr. Harburn told the News, back at the fiftieth anniversary of the introduction of hydro to Seaforth in 1960 that Mr. Ed. M ole, who had been superintendent of the steam power plant,. came to the newly formed Public Utilities Commission in the same capacity.. • BEFORE SEAFORTH HAD HYDRO — A steam plant created the power that was needed in ,homes here. The Scott steam generating plant was in the building now housing Seaforth Creamery. Ed. Mole was superintendent at Scott's plant and he later became superintendent for the new PUC. There was some controversy about hydro in Seaforth in 65 years ago 1910,. That was the year that Sir Adam Beck spoke to a public meeting here about the advantages of hydro. According to, a clipping from the Seaforth News, the late Dr. Fred Harburn, who was a member of Seaforth's council in 1910 said on the fiftieth anniversary of hydro coming to Seaforth that there was some opposition to the idea. Dr. Harburn, lather of Mrs. Irwin Trewartha, said that Scott Bros., who owned the steam generating plant here were opposed to a hydro hook up and "won considerable support against it".
