"I think that I shall never see"
.Seaforth hag a
Centemagl-troe'
One of the 4ost , interesting
historic sites in Seaforth is hard to
find and practica ly unknoWn.
It's a tree . . a huge oak tree
that is.selebrating its Centennial
this year too, The tree grows
smack up against the back wall of"
Gerald's Datsun on Goderich St.
West. Frank Reynolds of
Harpurhey knoWs the tree's
interesting story.
The big oak was planted by his
grandfather, Steven Lamb, on his
farm a half mile west of Walter in
1875, the year his eldest daughter
was born. In 1890, the family
moved to Seaforth and decided to
take their little oak tree with
them.
Mr. Lamb, and Mr. Reynolds'
mother, who was Mrs. James E.
,ReYnolds carefully transplanted
the tree onto their front lawn on
West William Streetf ,around the
corner from Gerald's DittSltt.
In 1925 Mt. Reynolds says, the
great oak lost 25 feet off its top
because of an ice Storm. His
mother thought the treewould die
then,- but it- survived. Mrs.
Reynolds Sr. died in 1961, aged
86.
Then several years ago a large
portion of the tree's roots were
cut away to make room for the
foundation of the enlarged
garage.
But the tree survived that too
and it still towers over the
Goderich St. garage crammed
against its back wall. AS Mr..
Reynolds says, after X11 this time
and all these.indignities it is
a powerful and healthY tree".
f
A CENTENNIAL TREE — Trees have histories too and this large oak which almost
_ grows into the wall behind Gerald's Datsun on Goderich St west is 100 years old
this year.
THE DOCTOR I WS -BUGGY 'Long time
Seaforth doctor, James G. Scott must have been
getting into hiS buggy, to go on a house call. The
'identity of his, helper is unknpwn but the buggy is
parked in front of Dr. Scott's house and office on
Goderich St. West , where his grandson Harry how
lives. Across the street , is the Norihside United
