The opening game at the Lions
Park proved extra exciting last
Monday evening as the Villagers
edged out a narrow 5 - 3 win over
a determined Texaco nine.
The first inning saw the Maki's_
leave two men on base but failed
to score. However, the Villagers
counted two runs in their half of
the frame as three walks followed
by singles by Bill McCurdy and
Harry Cook pushed the two runs
across.
The second inning was almost a
repeat of the first as the Duffers
again left two men on base. but
failed to capitalize while the
Villagers added a single run to
their total as Bill Price and Doug
Hildebrand both singled. The
third saw the Duffers again foiled
as they failed to score. The
Villagers added another single
marker as Bob Watson and Ralph
Woods combined with singles to
move the Village in front. 4 - 0.
Frustrated
The fourth saw the Duffers
frustrated again as several
outstanding fielding plays
prevented the Texaco nine from
hitting the scoreboard. A double
by Randy Gridzack drove home
Dave Broome to give the Village a
commanding S - 0 lead.
The fifth inning, saw the game
start to swing toward the Duffers
as they finally managed a single
run as Ben Akkar scored on Ron
Beuerman's single. The Villagers
failed to add to their total as the
Duffers tightened up in the field.
The sixth frame saw the end of
the scoring as the Duffers pushed
across 2 runs as eight batters
reached the plate but they left
three men on base as the Village
managed to get out of a jam with
a 2 run lead.
The bottom of the sixth saw
Ron Beuerman strike out the side

to keep the score at 5 - 3. The
Duffers then' failed to reach John
Coleman as he allowed only one
hit to win the game for the
Villagers.
Both teams played excellent
ball as each team managed only 9
hits and both pitchers allowed
just 6 walks. The big difference
was the Duffers' left 14 men
stranded while the Village left
just 9 men on base.
The late game at the Pool. just
got/ nicely underway when the
rains came and forced the game
to be postponed. The Travellers
and Main Street will replay their
encounter Tuesday night at the
Lions Park.
At the Optimist Park the first
game also proved a real cliff
hanger as the Firemen squeeked
out a narrow 9 - 8 win over a much
improved Teachers nine. The
game was a real See-saw battle
with the game in doubt until the
final out. Again no store sheets
were made available so further
details are not available.
The late game saw the only
lopsided game as the Turf Club
remained undefeated with a
convincing 21 - 6 win over an
outclassed Queens squad. The
game was never in doubt as the
Turf started fast and never looked
back as after the first inning the
Queens never mounted , any
offence and were not
even in the game.
Next week's action will see the
Turf Club put their unbeaten
streak on the line against a much
improved Firemen nine while the
late contest at the Lions Park will
see the Village face the
Travellers.
At the Optimist Park the
Queens and Teachers play the
early game while Main Street and
Texaco play the late encounter.

lose
Winthrop Bantams lost 24 to 6
but if three of Brussels nine ball
palyers were dropped from the
line up it would have been a close
game. Dean Hackwell, Scott
Wheeler and Doug.Shouldice of
Brussels, each scored 4 runs
apiece. However, the difference
was made by their pitcher, Scott
Wheeler who struck out 14 of 18
outs which is just over 77% of thr•
outs made by the team.
Winthrop's top scorer was Danny
McClure who had 2 of the 6
Winthrop runs. We hope our luck
will change for the June 4th game

St. Columban Soccer Club
played a strong game last Sunday
against the London Portuguese
Club and deserved more than the
tie. The local club scored early on
a beautiful goal by Bill Docking
after only about 10 minutes of
play. Pat Delaney centered the
ball from the left wing and Bill
booted it into the net in full stride.
After this goal St. Columban
controlled the play almost
completely for the remainder of
the first half.
However, the inability to finish
off the plays, some touch luck and
strong goaltending by the
Portuguese keeper kept the'score
at 1 - 0 at half time.
St. Columban started the
second half as they finished the
first, missing numerous scoring
chances. In the last 15 minutes of
