The shed, which contained about 200 rabbits, was a complete loss. A son, Jim Holmes said the family had burned some brush in the corner of a field when the wind changed and the fire spread to the shed. (Staff Photo) ••• Something to say by Susan White What's in a name? common sense reasons that gave = other settlements around here a name? Let's see....there's Constance, Beechwood, Slabtown, Varna, Londesborough and a little farther afield two of our favourites, Molesworth and Wartburg? J Hensall is called that because the two bachelor brothers who founded it were born in Hensall, Yorkshire, England. Where Walton and Winthrop got their names doesn't seem to be general knowledge. Does anyone know the answers? Or the wierd, wonderful or just plain Did you ever wonder how the town, village or township you live 0' in got its name? We've wondered especially when we have to write headlines using the long and unwieldy ones like Tuckersmith pr Harpurhey. Type those out • several times when writing a story and you begin to • wonder why the founding fathers didn't go for something concise and ./ easily spelled like Dublin or Grey: Seaforth, we • dealt with in the Centennial issue. As far as rescarche s by retired teacher, Mable Turnbull have diScoNiered, the name was chosen by James Patton, one of three men who laid out the original town. He was a Scot' and named our town after the Earl- of Seaforth and Loch Seaforth. The name . is of Gallic' and Norse origin and means a sea firth. •• That would seem to be a bit of wishful thinking on Mr. Patton's part, since the nearest "sea" is about 17 miles away in Bayfield. But maybe he was accurate ... Seaforth in the early days is usually described as being water logged and swampy. Tuckersmith; that marvellous tongue twister, is the name of the INownship to the south of Seaforth for quite an ordinary reason. Martin Tucker Smith was one of the Canada Company directors in England. These directors were naturally anxious to have their names attached to the land they were carving up and selling to settlers in .. the wilderness of Upper Canada. Thus, though few of us know or care what happened to Martin Tucker Smith, wealthy English- man, we have his name before us every day. The present spelling of the township as all one word "Tuckersmith" came about just because it was easier to write, says Belle Campbell in her history of the township. Mckfllop also got its name from a Canada Company director. 11 His first name isn't available where we looked, in a history of the township by Lillian Grummett but aren't you glad to know because McKillop is McKillop Jecause the old gentleman speculated in land in the colonies? Harpurhey (the , "hey" causes no end of spelling problems) was • jilt name Dr. Wm. Chalk, founder of the hamlet, gage to his farm, just south of Highway 8 on the road through the community. It was named for a 'village in his native England and soon the settlement around his farm took on the name. Egrnondville, of course, was named for the Van Egmonds who owned the land on which the village developed. ' 0 There are two versions about how Brucefield got its name. It may be named after Robert the Bruce of Scotland, because of its proximaty to the Bannockburn River or in honour of Major • Bruce, brother-in-law and aide de camp to Governor General Lord Elgin. We prefer Robert the Bruce - more romantic and ofmcient. Dublin is named after the chief city of Ireland and. St. Columban after a saint of the same name. Trustees of the Huron.Perth RoMan Catholic Separate School board narrowly defeated a motion to keep the number of professional degelopment(1#ys within the system to six, the same as last year, instead of the ten that Director of Education John Vintar recommended. Mr.Vintar gave board members the dates and tentative agendas for the days, alon with a list of 'what 'Was done in the system's PD days last year. The days for this year were set by a committee ot four principals. Trustees noted that one day, September 19, is the date of the Stratford Fall Fair. "What do PD days have to do with fairs?" Wingham trustee William Kinahan asked. There is a lot of complaining in Wirigham about children not being able to attend the Teeswater Fall Fair, he said, and suggested that perhaps the hoard should take a look at a list of area fairs. The PD day is on the Stratford Fall Fair day so that children won't have to miss any more school than -necessary, Stratford trustee Ron Marcy said. Stratford pupils already get a half day off to attend the fair. Mr.Vintar said the Ministry allows a maximum of 12 PD days. He' said the two adjacent public boards are still working on their dates, so the days couldn't he co-ordinated: "Sometimes I feel we should go where we're going and not always look to the other boards," he said. "When trustees, raised the question of savings in busing and crossing guard costs if the PD days were- the same in all three systems, Mr, Vintar said "We're flexible enough that we can make changes if there's a saving to the public." "Do you see a need for an increase of four days over last year?" Trustee Ted Geoffrey of Zurich asked Mr. Vintar. Mr. Vintar said he did. PD days are held at the county, zone and school levels. Trustee Francis Hicknell asked if there wasn't a need for more county wide days. Not really, Mr.Vintar replied. "Specific areas, like the metric system, are better treated in small groups." Trustee Shantz suggested that the first Pd day, scheduled for Sept. -8, be 2beld the first day of school,. Sept. 2 and "let the kids stay home another day." "We get a lot of flack on these professional, development days", he said, and suggested the flack would increase if children were only in school four days and then were off for a PD day. The September 8 PD day is to organize the school placement of -children and trustee Ron Marcy suggested that"teachers wouldn't know the problems of individual students on the first day of school. Mr. Vintar said the *a day of school had been suggested as a PD day last year,, and the board had voted it down. Another PD day, for reporting to parents, is icheduled for November 28. "The majority of parents work and can't get to school in mid afternoon.
