Final score was 10 The annual Seaforth Junior Farmer Broomball Tourhament took place at the Seaforth Arena from Friday,February 31 'to Saturday,, March 1. Gerry O'Reilly was the chairman of this tournament and organized the games. The tournaments began early Friday night. Below is a list of the men's games played. The winners of the first game played go to the 'A' division. The losers of the first game go into the 'B' division. Clinton vs Seaforth - Seaforth won in overtime 3 - 2. Wellington vs Perth Wellington won 3 - 0. Lambton vs Bruce - Bruce-won in overtime 3 - 2. Grey vs Dufferin - Grey won 1 O. lead. In the 3rd period the Beavers tried to, catch the Sunocos, scoring two straight goals, narrowing the count to 5 to 4. Bill McLaughlin scored on passes from Bob , Beuttenmiller and Jack Mcllwain. Bruce McManus scdred the fourth Beaver goal on passes from Ken Devereaux and James Sills. Fort Elgin then added an insurance goal and held the Beavers for a 6 to 4 score and the series. Both Seaforth goalie Fred Selman and Al Carter played very well in the Seaforth net. The Seaforth Beavers are now playing the Mitchell team in a 4 out of 7 series with all the games scheduled for Mitchell on Friday and Tuesday nights starting at 8:30 with the 1st game Friday, March '7. South Simcoe vs Peel - Peel won 1 - 0. In the Men's 'A' division the Wellington team won the trophy against the Grey team, with a score of 3-2. In the men's .`B' division the Perth t earn won the trophy against Lambton with a score of 3-0. The Ladies' team also began their tournament on Friday night. Their schedule is listed below. Perth vs Lambton - Lambton won 2-0. Seaforth vs Wellington - Wellington won in overtime 3 - 2. In the Ladies' A' division Lambton won the trophy against Wellington with a! score of 1-0. In the 'B' division Perth won the trophy against Seaforth in The Flyers and Stars finally came up with solid efforts last Sunday night and as a result both teams evened their series, with their respective opponents, at one game apiece. The early game (Flyers-Blues) was, at times, a chippy affair but that game could not compare with the garbage that the second game was to offer. The Flyers had to win, of course, to stay alive and prolong the series with the Blues. They erupted for 5 straight goals and built u p an early 6 - 1 lead. The Blues did not give up and in the 3rd period they came back to connect for 3 goals and came close to pulling it 'out. Tena cious fOre-checking by the ' Flyers late in the game prevented the Blues from any last-ditch effort to pull out a tie or The Blues' Gary Nicholson gave out a number of bone- crunching checks and the Flyers passed off the puck before reaching his t erritory. Those who did n ot found themselves with several bruises and a possible headache as Bob Montgomery will attest to that. Lucky fort the Flyers that Nicholson plays a hard hitting and not dirty brand of hockey. "'The Blues defense played well all nitht with Greg Rau leading rushes and John Watt covering up in front of the net. The ! Flyers won with relentless fore-cheering and the rare ability t keep the line of Muir, Pinder and Finlayson in check. They held that line to one assist by Bill Pinder. (Rare feat indeed). Because the big line could not score the Flyers managed to get overtime with a score of 1-0. On Saturday night everyone enjoyed dancing to the sound of the ',!Town and Country Gentlemen". During the night special trophies were presented to individuals who were outstanding in their games played. From Seaforth, Barb Doig won a,trophy for' "all star wing':.. Debbie McClure was the runner up for trophy for centre. Joanne Kunz was awarded a trophy for -defence and another trophy for "all star wing" was presented to Brad Finlayson. After the presentation of the trophies, King and Queen of the Broomball Tournament was announced. Sarah Morgan from Perth County is the new Queen. Brian McKinley from Lambton county is the new King. the best. He said - "They should paint a number SO at center ice and give the Kings a football". This statement was accepted by most of the people watching the game. In truth the Stars were not Angels either but you can take only so much and the result was the worst display of I.H.L. play in some time. The referees let much of it go. Why call a penalty if the result is going to be constant arguing and threats of physical abuse? There were only 5 minor penalties called in the game. The total should have been 35. Granted most of the nonsense is forgotten at the end of a game. But what if a player is cut for 20 stitches, suffers a serious head injury, or gets some ribs broken as a result of stick swinging? I believe saying you're sorry after the fact would not help pay someones' medical bills or make up for the cost wages one would probably incur. At the first of the season we all agreed to give full support to the officials. We have not done that to the slightest degree. Hypocrisy: Simulation of virtue or goodness. Hypocrite: Pretender. We have all contributed to the hypocrisy of this league. We have constantly abused the rules and the officials which we agreed to support at the beginning of the season. If we want to get rid of this title we had better stop "pretending" and start playing hockey before someone gets hurt or the referees all quit. It may seem late in the season to bring out any idea of respect and sportsmanship but if it doesn't start next week - next season should be a dismal failure. (Mountrorest Confederate Photo) Jim Carter led the Flyers with 2 goals. Single tallies went to Jack Groothius, Bill Teall, Ben Akker and Jim Montgomery. The Blues got goals from Greg Rau, Ken Burgess, Jim "Wes" Finlayson and Larry Dale. . ' The Stars were in the same position as the Flyers and they had to win. Bill Price connected for 3 goals with Kevan' Broome getting the other m arker for the 4 Stars. Art Strong, Jerry Feeny and Ray Devereaux replied for the Kings. Devereaux' goal was an oddity as he scored while sitting down in front of Gary Montgomery. With all kinds of time he just lift ed a !raver over Montgomery's head into the. net. Getting back to the Blues and Flyers for just a minute there was only one bad penalty. Dave Broome of the Flyers slashed Greg Rau but other than that the game was fast, hard hitting and exciting. 'Nothing came of the penalty. Broome served 3 minutes in the penalty box and the gathe progressed without any hacking and chopping -that the second game offered. Seven Goals Somehow 7 goals were scored in the game. How the Kings found time to score three of them is beyond comprehension. The Stars consist, of fast skaters and clean hockey players. They also had the fewest penalty "minutes through the season,. The Kings on the other hand had the most penalty minutes by a country mile, „The whole problem with them is that they, have about 6 guys who want to play hockey and who are capable of playing good h ockey.
