We have heard much in recent
Months about the runaway costs
'of alth care. Ontario Minister
of ealth, Frank Miller, warned
i October thp costs are increas-
g by about 16 per cent a year in
this province - and that the total
health bill could reach $11• billion•
by' 1984, approximately the figure
for the whole of Canada in 1.974.
Much of this expenditure is on
What Miller and otheis have
called."diseases of choice'. In
other words, we're increasingly
using medical and hospital ser-
vices to treat diseases we could
avoid in the first place.
Since this is a time of year for
stocktaking and new resolutions,
let's look at some of these
diseases of choice and how they
can be aVoided.
Obesity - Earlier this year, a
Nutrition Canada survey r'eported
that more than half of a'll
Canadians are overweight. For
some people very few - the
' problem is not avoidable; but for
most it is. Resolve to get back to
your ideal weight through proper
diet and regular exercise.
Heart Disease - The incidence
Of heart attacks has increased by
60 per cent over the past 15 years.
And it's still , rising. Heart
disease is the •major cause of
death in adults - and is.largely a
disease. of choice, or lifestyle.
Here again, diet and exercise,
properly conducted, is the ans-
wer. And so. -is quitting the
cigarette habit, so strongly impli-
catepto lietii" disease,
Aleholisrn - in Ontario, alcohol
plays a _part in half of all auto
accidents, accounts for hundreds
of thousands of man-hours a year
in absenteeism from work, and
-for more than 10 per cent of all
hospital costs. It is estimated that ,
close to 300,000 Ontarians drink
enough alcohol to endanger their
• health e It' you think you're one of
these, resolve to drink only in
moderation, bui if you can't do
that, you'd be better to quit
altogether.
Stress and Anxiety Inevit-
abilitie ts modern living they
max be, but too much of either is
dangerous. Resolve to recognize
your boiling point, and to cool
things off not by popping tranqui-
lizers. but by getting involved in
some activity that will counter-
balance the pressures. Exercise,
relaxing hobbies arid 'yoga are all
good antidotes.
Resolutions are easy to make
and difficult to keep. As far as
your ilealth'iK concerned, nothing
could be more worth-
while that consciously choosing
not to risk getting "diseases of
choice," But don't attempt to do
it all at'once. It may be very noble_
to 'try to replace all your health
vices with virtues in one fell
swoop, but it's almost impossible.
Make your resolutions
one - and stick to them. And have,
a happy, healthy New Year,

NEEDS TEENS IN FAMILY
Jamie Ill's just turried .TO:- -He's slender and healthy with
brown hair, blue eyes and fair skin, He needs glasses for ,
astigmatism and far-sightedness ink doesn't like wearing them,
so they are often conveniently forgotten. ,
This lad likes grown up company but isn't a good mixer with
children. Part of the problem is that he is poorly co-ordinated so
that some activities, especially sport's. are hard for him. He
tends to be a loner, preferring crafts or reading or televisIdn to .
games.
Jamie is in a class. for children with perceptual problems. -.He
enjoys school and tackles his work with enthusiasm.
Academically...lie is at the Grade two to four level 'but in a recent
verbal test he ranked with some i l•year-olds.
Warm, firm, understanding parents and some teenagers to
take an_ interest in him will be an ideal family for Jamie. To
