zine published an article urging excellent job of meeting their
responsibilities to their' 'fellow
veterans but some were not.
Now we have Veterans Affairs
Minister Dan MacDonald saying
in .a speech in Halifax recently,
y
that as many as half a million
people may be missing benefit$
because they are not aware of
existing programmes under th'e
Veterans Charter. The Depart-
ment has advertised extensively,
mainly in publications put out by
veterans' organizations but,
according to Mr. MacDonald, less
than half of the veterans In
Canada belong to ex -service-
men's associations.
if, indeed, half a million
persons do not "know about
benefits to which they may be
entitled, the Legion is faced with
a real challenge in endeavoring to
make contact with them. Legion
branches have a great deal of
work to do. It is rea lb apparent
that .the number o veterans and
widows qualifying for benefits in
their communities is much
greater whereth branches
with live -wire . ervice o ers.

with those who may need help.
Mr. MacDonald's words indi-
cate that the Legion has no cause
to be complacent. Members
should not leave everything to
their branch service. officer or
secretary, or to the 'profes'sionals
in DVA. Every member. hould
make it his self -allotted task to
contact veterans' families in his
'community who do not belong to
the Legion or have no connection.
It is quite possible they may be
unaware, of the assistance avail-
able through veterans' legis-
lation, especially the broader
basis for awards under amend-
ments,enacted in recent years.
If every member does his part
in this.iniportant work, he will be
fulfilling his solemn obligation to
ensure, that proper attention is
paid to all who served, - including
their dependants.
