FIRST WORLD WAR VETERAN"
CELEBRATES 93rd BIRTHDAY
Last Saturday Jan 20th, Com-
rade Duncan Aikenhead, World
War I veteran and member of
Branch 156, celebrated his ninety
third birthday at his home in
Seaforth, helping him celebrate
were his brother from London
and a few friends.
Comrade Aikenhead was a
native of the Brucefield area,
but for the past thirty years
has resided in Seaforth.
During World war I he joined
up with the 63rd Battalion but
was later transferred to the
Heavy Artillery. He was wounded
three times .and spent approxi-
mately ten months in military
hospitals overseas, he said ac-
tually he was only wounded twice,
as the first one was not very
serious, however his records
show that he was wounded three
times, the last time at Vimy
Ridge for which he was'-hospi-
talized for seven months, a por-
tion of which he spent at the hos-
pital in Orpington, Kent.
Comrade Aikenhead did not
talk much of his experiences
when Comrade Gordon Scott,
President of Branch 156 and John
Baker visited him at his home
last Sunday. He did tell us that
he used to enjoy attending the
reunions of the 63rd Battalion,
but confessed 'that he had not
been to one for quite some time
since there were so few survi-
vors they had ceased to hold
them.
One thing that he did say
about his tour of duty overseas,
was that he will never regret
going, but that he would never
