win over the Legion nine by a
,10 - 6 count. Eric Chuter picked
up the win in a difficult game as
the surprising Legion nine cop-
tinued to remain in the"game to
threaten several times through-
out the encounter. Only several
key offensive plays allowed, the.,
Motormen to hold down a deter-
mined Legion squad as they play-
ed almost flawless baseball: Joe
,Gillespie went the distande for
the Legion and pitched a good
game but several miscues allow-
ed the motormen to add to their
total.
With only two weeks left in the
regular schedule the teams con-
tinue to jockey for playoff posi-
tions and each game has more
significance.
This week's action will see
the Texaco squad challenge the

At the Lion's Park the Villagers

The Merchants Juvenile TOM
dropped their first playoff galne
to Chesley before a good home-
town crowd Sunday evening.
Seaforth could not hit the
ball as Thomson; the Chesley
01teher hand cuffed the Merchants
on 2 hits - 2 walks - 1 hit
by pitch and he struck out 14
C-4th batters, and allowed no
runs. The entire Chesley team
played very good baseball as they
only made 1 error which did not
make any difference to the out-.
some of the game.
Seaforth's two hit singles
came from the bats of Gary Eisler
and Jerry Feeney. The Mer-
chants were in the game until
the sixth inning, when Chesley
started to rally for 3 more runs
to add to their 1 run lead which

the 2 Seaforth hits and he picked
off a Chesley runner trying to —
steal third base. There were
other defensive standouts for the
Merchants. Larry Broome play-

side's team to win 30 - 6.
On Wednesday evening Joan
pinder's team won over Cathy
Dallas team 29 - 12.
This week saw all the play-
off games going: •Heima Right's
team won over SandraColeman's
team at the Rec to the tune of
31 s- 22. Joan Pinder's team
5 - 4 score. It was an exciting
game and the fastest this season.
Both teams were out for the win
,as first place was at stake.
Mainstreet opened up a 2 - 0
first inning led when Bill Rober-
ton hit a two run homer. The
second inning was scoreless and
the Mainstreet opened a 3 - 0
lead in the third on a walk and a
double by Ray Anstett. The fourth
inning finished all the scoring as
the Turf opened the inning with
5 big runs 'on the strength of a
grand slam" home run by Paul
McKellar. Mainstreet 'replied'
with a solo effort by Bob Bent-
tenmiller to leave the Turf ahead
5 - 4. The remainder of the
game was scoreless as both
teams played excellent ball. Jack
ML1wain went the distance on
the Mound for the Turf picking
up the win while Jack Price suf-
fered his second loss for the
Mainstreeters.
A late encounter in another
game saw the Mechanics streng-
then their hold on third place with
a 14 - 8 win over the Village
squad. The Mechanics had dif-
ficulty in the early stages of the
game as the Villagers played
head-ups baseball and managed
to stay close for 3 innings. After
three innings, the Motormen held ,
a narrow 5-4 edge. From this
point on however, the Mechanics
took advantage of several mis-
cues and opened up a insurmount-
able lead as the Villagers tried
gamely to fight back but couldn't
contain the powerful bats of the
Motormen. Eric Chnter posted
his, seventh winfor the MechanicS,
while Rick Wood suffered his
sixth defeat.
Sunday night the Optimist
Park was the scene for the sec-,
and confrontation between the top
two teams and again the Turf
Chib remained undefeated as they
had very little difficulty in whip-
ping the Mainstreet squad by an
18 - 8 score.
The game started on an even
keelf as both teams scored once
in the first inning and then held
their opponents scoreless in the
second. The third inning, how-
ever, was all Turf Club as' they
took advantage of several mis-
cues to count 6 big runs while
holding the Mainstreeters to 1 ,
,counter. From this point on, it
softball
won over Cathy Dallas's team
to wind up that series, 2 games
to 0. This game was played
at the Lions park.'
The late game at the Rec
saw Nora Eckert's' team edge
Carol Rayside's team out, with
a score of 26'- 25. Avery close
game. Now Nora Eckert's team
and Joan Plnder's team will begin
their count down.

plied with 6 in their half of the
sixth. Jack Brice suffered the
loss for the Mainstreet squad.
Larry ,Dale provided much of the
power at the plate for the Turf
with a 4 for 5 effoit while Ray
Anstett replied with 3 hits for
the Mainstreeters.
Monday's' action saw the Vil-
lagers upset the favoured Tea-
chers by a. 14 - 8 count in the
opening encounter at the Optim-
ist Rec. Grounds. The teachers
-took a quick 2 - 0 first inning.
lead but saw •this dwindle as the
Villagers struck back to even the
count after two innings.
The Village then opened a
5 --2' lead in the third and never
looked back as they played a
strong game and took advantage
ofr,several defensive lapses to
run up a big lead. Rick Wood
went the distance for the Village
and was the winning pitcher while
Bill Weber required some -relief
help from Howard James on the
mound for the bookworms. John
Coleman swung the big bat as he
led the Village attack with" a
4 - 4 effort at the plate.
The late encounter saw a free
swinging contest as the Firemen
edged a determined Texaco squad
by a narrow 20 - 17 margin.
Both teams 'made several errors
allowing extra nibs 'to score and
both teams had little difficulty
in hitting the long ball as the
Texaco team collected three
round trips while the -Firemen
collected 4 'triples. Don Scrim-
geour collected a grand slam -for
, the Duffers while Norm Irwin and
Bobi.Dinsmore added the solo
.shots for the losers. Jim Sills,
Jim Glew, Tom • Phillips and
