A hot summer day, Some
people are swimming and surf-
ing, camping in cool woods, or
sailing along with a soft breeze.
Simmer is to enjoy. But•mill-
ions are miserable with summer
colds.
Actually, young children have
the most coldS. preschoolers
get an average of 6 to 12 colds
a year. Parents of young child-
ren have about six colds a year,
whereas other adults have only
two or three. People over 45
have the fewest colds.
According to the Common
Cold Research Unit at Harvard
Hospital in Britain-- where they
have injected more than 11,000
healthy volunteers with cold vir-
uses -- most people have their
own specific cold "personality."
Some almost always have head
colds. Others get congestion in
the chest. Some ache all over
and have scratchy symptoms in
the eyes," The one almost un-
iversal complaint, though, is a
ninny nose.
There ate at teat 80 diff-
erent known cold viruses, and
some canoeing.

Mr. and Mrs. Russell Morden,
Mr. Geddes' grandparents at
Stouffville.
• Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Carter and
family spent their holidays camp-
ing in Midland this year.
Visiting Mr. Ivy Henderson
scientists think there are many
more. Immunity to one virus
is no asset against fending off
the other 79. As a result, no-
body is too optimistic about the
future of cold vaccines. The
best protection, is staying as
healthy as possible and avoiding
crowded places.
Most research shows that
people pick up colds in crowd-
ed places from other people who
have infections. Coughs and
sneezes are perfect trans-
portation for cold viruses. An
uninhibited, uncovered sneeze
travels- at the incredible speed
of 103 miles per hour, say re-
searchers at the Cold Unit. Some
of the viruses die after a few
minutes in the air. Others live
for hours.
Watch out for anyone with
sniffles and sneezes. And cover
your own. To find out more
information -about colds and how
to live with them, contact your
local. tuberculosis and respira-
tory disease 'association. They
have the facts.
