Council of " Ontario, organized in 1959-lib:ter . tl~e financial.. Sponsorship of -the— Ontario Department of Agri culture 'and Food, will, effective April 1, 1972, receive that sponsorship from the Workmen's Compensation, Board of. ntario. - In announcing the change the Iviluister-,01! Agriculture, W. A. Stewart said that the sponsbrhip transfer, was a logical move, in- asmuch as there are more than 27,000 Ontario farmers" With eniployees and some ,000 self- employees and ' some 2,000 self-employed farmers without employees, covered by Work- men's Compensation. The ex- tension of Workmen's Compen- sation coverage to farm petiple was seen by the Minister as one of the most significant steps taken in the field of farm safety in, recent years. By accepting .„_ sponsorship of the Farm Safety Council, the Workmen's' Corn- ,_pensation 'Board was in effect' ' w reinvesting a small portion of •,4 the farmer's premiums in the farm safety program, something that could hopefully result 'in fewer accidents and a net re-. duction in 'the premium rate, Mr. Stewart commented that too many people consider work- men's Compensation coverage a "fringe benefit` for their ein•;, ployees", when in fact it was a "controllable cost" of the farm operation. He noted that the cost was controllable in that all farmers working together topre- vent accidents could effect a 0 steadily declining premium rate.
