PEACE IN OUR"TIME
0- Last Thursday President
Richard Nixon began his histork
journey to China, the first U.S.
President ever to visit Peking.
--He departed knowing that twenty
years of bad relations with Red
China would not be swept Away
by his impending talks with Mao
Tse-tung and Chou En-tai and
other Government leaders. He
expressed, the most he hoped to
achieve would be impro4d rela-
tions between the two countries.
As the President took off
from Andrews Air Force Base
in the Presidential Jet, 'The
Spirit of '76, some people lik-
ened it to the Dove of Peace
winging its way to the East, as
indeed this is a peace mission.
• Thirty-three years ago Brit-
ain's Prime Minister Neville
Chamberlain took a similar jour-
ney to Germany and returned
with Hitler's personal guarantee
that Britain- and Germany would
live in peace. Should president
Nixon get the same guarantee
from Mao Tse-tung for his coun-
try, it will be hoped by people
all over the world that Mao Tse-
tung is a more honorable man
than Hitler. One Munich in
lifetime is more than enough.
Some . may wonder what this
has to do with Canada or the
Royal Canadian Legion. Thdre
are few organizations as dedi-
cated to the preservation of
peace 'as the Royal Canadian
Legion.
