covers tons of this essential
ingredient for the manufacture
of steel 24 hours of every pos-
sible working day, it is hard
to envision its rare beauty hav-
ing been born of, the needs of
war. Red of the high grade
hematite, turquoise and gray
of greenstone blend with the
purples and sulphur colors that
weather in a summer sun. This
was once nature's lode hovered
covetously beneath the waters
of a lake.
When, during World War II,
iron ore stock piles dwindled
under the demands of hungry
U.S. blast furnaces, when ore
ships were targets for submar-
ine shells and the only feasible
source was the known ore body
which geological surveys had
forecast lay beneath that in-
land Steep Rock Lake, one of
the greatest feats in Canadian
engineering history was under-
taken. Urgency pushed a job
that had been estimated would
require from three to six years
to complete. It was done in less
than two. The course of a river
was changed, a lake was drain-
ed into another when the hum
of sea dredges split the calm
of the bush within almost a
stone's throw of the small vil-
lage of Atikokan, Ontario.
Since that sunny May morn-
ing in 1945, when the first
long ton was recovered from
its bed where centuries before
glacial action had deposited it,
to last year's report to the
shareholders of this non-cap-
tive mining venture, more than
25 million tons of iron ore have
been shipped in the ore cars
by Canadian National Railways
over its spur line to the IN
dock at Port Arthur.
Automation has reduced the
prediction that Atikokan, with
its 300 inhabitants, would be-
come a city of 16 thousand
persons to a levelling off of
some six thousand residents.
More Canadian ore mines have
been discovered and put into
operation since those harrow-
ing war years. New methods
for upgrading ore make a fur-
ther investment of at least 15
million dollars a necessity.
Steep Rock is determined to
stay in this highly competitive
field.
I was a guest of this com-
pany recently and I carried
away with me several marble-
like charcoal colored pellets.
They are the result of testing
Steep Rock ore in pelletizing
equipment. When the company
is satisfied, it has found the
best method possible for this
system of upgrading ore and
the present endeavour on the
part ,al senior executives to
negotiate new contracts has
been fulfilled, the first sod for
its new pelletizing project will
be turned.
Away To Good Start
The pelletizing system will
make it possible to ship three
million tons annually. While
this is still in the planning
stage Steep Rock, away to a
good start this spring, was al-
ready well ahead of bast year's
coarse ore loading by almost
3,000 carloads, at the end of
June. Winter stripping prepar-
ed mining operations and when

Ore Mine Looks To Future
