Buildings Reflect Character
Of Builders, Their Community
The Colonial Craft House pictured here was
originally a miller's home, approximately 120 years
ago. In fact, this area which is known as Piper's
Dam was the site of a small village which consisted
of a brewery, grist and woollen mills. Mrs. S. White-
man is very enthused with her Colonial Craft House
to the extent that she creates much of the handi-
crafts that are displayed. Her crafts include blanket
and place-mat weaving, stone polishing and wood
carving. Wherever possible, all methods that are
used to make these handicrafts are with the same
equipment that the pioneers had. Besides the spin-
ning wheel, in the picture here, there is a loom used
to do all the weaving, an overshot water wheel that
polishes the stones that are set in bracelets and
pendants. Just this last year, the Whiteman's have
begun to use some century old split-rail fencing to
make decorative wood pieces.
The character of a village
such as Bayfield is reflected
in its architecture. Canada's
boisterous pioneer period pro-
duced utilitarian homes. But
by the late 1800's the character
of our people had changed to
one of elegance and sophistica-
tion, and the homes changed
with them. As always great
Canadians built great homes.
Such a house is Lambton
Lodge, located at Beverley and
Baldwin Streets in Toronto and
built in 1875 by George Brown.
the founder of the Globe news-
paper. It reminds one of some
of the statlier homes in Hay-
field area.
Image of Man
In its stalwart lines we see
an image of the man himself:

Confederation—man of taste,
his life mirrored in the great
house with its uncompromising
mansard roof, its castiron fence
and generous windows. It was
in this house he died as a result
of an assassin's bullet. It is in
keeping with George Brown's
character that Lamhton Lodge
now forms part of a School for
Retarded Children.
Think Big!
The windows of Lambton
Lodge were something of which
he was particularly concerned.
He wanted nothing small and,
in those days, it was a problem
to come by big areas of glass.
All glass came from England--
via Pilkington Bros.-- now the
largest glass firm in the coun-
try. A Pilkington Glass office

Lambton Lodge stands as an

one of that same confederation's
chief architects.
