Lawn
Mushro...
Edible
Or Not?
by D. A. Pallett,
Fruit and Vegetable Specialist
Most lawns produce a' few
mushrooms from time to, time.
They may be unsightly; they May
make a good meal; and they may
cause illness when eaten. In addi-
tion, mushrooms growing in the
wild are a worry to parents
whose children might eat them.
Fairy ring mushrooms, so
called because they grow in cir-
cular .patches, are one of the
commonest of lawn mishrOoms
and fortunately are one of the
best for eating. This mushroom
can be cooked fresh or dried
for future use. The fairy ring•
cap is up to 2 inches in dia-
meter, buff colored, and flat
except for a bulge in the cen-
ter. Gills are whitish buff.
Beware, however, of another
mushroom that grows along with,
the fairy ring mushroom. It is
whitish or grayish-white and has
numerous narrow gills set
closely together. It can cause
acute discomfort if eaten.
The glistening inky cap is a
common species of lawn mush-
room in Ontario. With the-large
number of new houses built in
the past 10 years, this species
could be a result of wood or
other organic food supply, bur-
led in the sod. It may appear
in gre'at numbers in 'success-
ive crops followjng wet periods.
The fruit bodies are, tip to 2
inches across, somewhat bell-
shaped, ochre-tan fading to white
in 'color and, when young, cov-
ered with glistening particles.
The gills are white when the
plant is young. Closely related
to this species are the common
inky caps anitst aggyinalie mush-
room.
.
Tne former is larger and
fleshier' and gray. Shaggy mane
has tall barrel-shaped fruit bod-
ies covered With shaggy scales.
The caps of all three can be
'eaten when they are 'young and
white; later they dissolve into
inky fluid (hence the name) aid
are both inedible and unsightly.
The beautiful piire smooth
Lepiota, which has a ring or
annulus' around its stem,' makes
good eating but it should not be
taken by the amateur because it
so closely resembles the deadly
poisonous Destroying Angel. The
one safety check' on this deadly
species is that ordinarily it -is
found only in tiie woods:-If wood-
land soil is used for topdressing
or in lawAsonstruction, there is
a possibility that this and.other
unexpect0k.species—Edi mush-
rooms niaatiippear. 1 -
There are three brii'wti to yel-
lowish small mushrooms without
common names that often grow
on lawns and are eaten by child-
ren, generally with no ill effects.
Chances of being poisoned
by eating lawn mushrooms is
slight, but it is best' to eat
only species that can be posit-
ively identified as edible. Let's
stick with Agarui bisporus or
the mushroom found fresh and
in the grocers' counter or on
the• shelf in cans.
Ont-
and guaranteed safe product.
