Genesco, 3 'I. — 35 .6 • 0 • „ • The Sports (Cokimin • • 4. • VS VS VS (BY Rob BradY)tl Repeat for Mainstroet ? With the season exactly• two-thirds gone it looks very much like the Mainstreet teatn may retain the League Championship which they won •following the playoffs last year in the Rea.forttrIndustrial Fastball League. Each team has five games remaining in the fifteen game schedule and Mainstreet has a four point edge on the second place Mechanics. The Mechanics have defeated Mainstreet ex,ice this year but have little chance to close the gap between the two teams as they do not meet again in the remaining five ga.m,es. The playoffs, however, might spell a different story. If you ' remember last year, Mainstreet was only in fourth place when the playoffS begaq, but when the smoke had cleared they were on top of the heap. Combined with the unpredictable nature of all sporting contests is the fact that in this its second year ,the league seems to be muchcloser than it was last year. There are no undefeated teams nor are there any winless teams in the league. Genesco and the Turf Club, who share the basement, each have three wins and it seems that these wins always occur at strategic times. For example, The Turf Club's victory over the Firemen this week prevented a two way - tie for secortiviplace. The Mechanics win over the Teachers broke a three way tie and the...Turf Club's unexpected win left the Mechanics alone in second, but still a long, hard, four points, behind the leading Mainstreet team? But things are warming up, an upset or two in the next few weeks could turn things around drastically and there are still the playoffs to go after that. And, as last year proved, in the playoffs, anything can happen. I'm not going to pick anybody to finish anywhere, mostly because I'm prejudiced towards my own team but also because I've never been right anyway. But don't let anything stand in your way, Pick a team and support it -to the wire and beyond into the playoffs. Join the:growing crowds who are finding the Industrial Ball an exciting way to pass a summer evening. Games are played each Monday at the Optimist Re- creation Grounds (1) and the Lions Park (2) and (3). Games remaining in the schedule are: Monday, July 26 - 1) Teachers 2) Firemen 3) Genesco . Mainstreet Is Pressing Mainstreet remains in first place in the Industrial Fastball League but are beginning to face a challenge from the charging , Mechanics. The Mechanics started slowly, losing their first three games, then .came to life winning six of their last seven games. Scores from Monday night's games were Mainstreet 10; Genesco 4 at the Optimist Re- creation Grounds. Mechanics de- feated the Teachers 15-5 in the early contest at Lions Park and in the second game it was the Turf Club over the Firemen 20- 8.
