Said Ryan half jokingly.
But as the club improved,
more and better players became
interested.
Last year 20 tried out and the
team finished in first place in the
Western Conference of the L & D
Second Division with a 14-2-2,
won-lost-tied record. St.qolum-
ban, along with Woodstock, the
Eastern Conference champs, won
promotion to the First Division.
This year Ryan reports that
25 players are working out for
14-15 positions and expects to
have "four or five" new faces on
this year's squad. •
Another- change was the play-
ing site, much to the consterna-
tion of ;some St. Columban-area
followers.
The team is now playipg all
of its home games at Seaforth'
District High School but Ryan
wasn't about to change the name.
"I might get shot when I
went up there," said Ryan and
the London eectrician didn't
sound half-Joking this time.
Most of last year's team had
hometowns' of Seaforth, Dublin or
St. Columban, which Ryan des-
cribes as "a church, a store and fF
three houses."
The club played a strong de-
fensive game, allowing dnly 20
goals in 18 league games and it
was headed by goaltender Paul .
O'Reilly, who stopped 11 of 16
penalty shots-with one going over
the crossbar and the other four
in the net.
There were four brother com-
binatioss on the team including
fullbacks Tom and Brian Melady
and halfbacks Ron and Murray
McClure_plas forwards George
and Tom Love.-Ryanlat-brother
Gerry was also on the forward
line. The other players, who were
With the club the major part of the
season were Paul Malone, centre
half and captain; halfbacks Ken
Coyne' and Gord Moylan, and for-
wards Ken Flanagan., Bob Young
and Dave Mclnally.
The team will help kick off 41
the regular L & D play May 8
at Seaforth against London Ger-
man Canadians in a 4 p.m. con-
test."
St. Columban doesn't have a
club nickname like most sports
teams but with"names like Ryiln,
O'Reilly or Flanagan in the line-
up one might think something like
the Irish might be suitable.
"We never .wanted to start
that," said Ryan, referring to
a habit - sometimes thought of
as a bad one in• some soccer
circles - of adopting a European
namefor your club. '
Besides, it is' a Canadian
team.

St. Columban is one of those
spots on a roadmap which you can
only find if you Itilow exactly
were t o look for it.
Located four miles southeast
of Seaforth on No. 8 highway, the
name is easily recognized by
players and followers of the
London and District Soccer
Association.
St. Columban is starting its
fifth season in the L & D and
this year moves up to First
Division competition, quite a feat
for a centre its, size.
But even more unique, as far
as soccer is concerned, the team
is made up entirely of Canadian-
born -players.
St. Columban is the only club
in the province with this distinc-
tion and probably one of the few-
teams in the dountry which can
boast such a statistic.
But the community comes by
it honestly. The fathers of many
of today's players were on St.
Columban teams in the 1920s and
'30s which gave the centre quite
a name for soccer in that era:
Harry Ryan of London, coach,
manager and secretary of the
team and a native of near-by
Dublin, says that he can remem-
ber starting to play soccer in
grade one . So he and most of
the other budding athletes in the „. . area grew up with a background
in the sport.
The team played in the Huron
Association until five Years ago
and many things have changed
since entering the L &x D, es-
---pecially the calibre of play.
