Fifty-four years ago this
month one of the greatest Bat-
tles in World War I was fought.
On the 9th of April, 1917 at
5:30 a.m, on Easter Monday the
Battle of Vimy Ridge began with
a thunderous roar of one thousand
guns. After this devastating bar-
rage which lasted three days,
the infantry then moved forward

the key point .guarding the level
plain of Douai, held by the Ger-
mans since 1914. When the Can-
adians conquered the ridge they
saw the whole plain at their feet;
the villages of Farbus, Vimy and
Little Vimy and beyond these the
hamlets of Willerval, Bailleul,
Oppy and Mericourt.
Memories of this momentous
action still live in the hearts of
the Veterans who survived. The
action was regarded as Canada's
greatest victory of World War I
and was acclaimed as a magni-
ficent example of the courage and
fighting qualities of the Canadian
