DEAR DORIS
- I met this guy just after
New Year's. We started going
out and we got aIongluit great.
• No fights or anything. He told
me so many times that he really
likes me and would never hurt
me, etc. •
Then he and some friends
moved into a house and they
were quite'bitsy that week, so 'I
never heard from him. Then he
• came down with hepatitis. He
isn't laid up in bed, so I don't
see why he can't phone me as -
he sits and watches TV all day.
I haven't heard from him for
nearly three weeks.
I can go and see him, but I
was wondering if it would be a
IP bad move. It might seem as
though I am chasing him, but I'm
not going over to confess my
love for him. All I want to do
is talk to him and if he doesn't
want to go out with me any
more - fine!
• My mother thinks I should
forget him because she thinks he
just dropped me, but what-if
that isn't the case? I realize he
is Inconsiderate, but I feel we
should talk it'over.
-WONDERING WHAT'S WRONG
DEAR WONDERING
If he really has hepatitis he
• hasn't- much .-pep for writing
letters or calling up girls.
Treat him as you would any
other friend. Send him a card;
or drop by (with some fruit or a
jar of jam) for a brief visit.
--- You'll soon find-out-how-te-feels.
Nowadays a girl doesn't have
to act the shrinking violet at the
expense of thoughtfulness. •
DEAR DORIS
- What am I to do with my
aged' mother? She will not make
friends, 'doesn't care for people.
She refuses to have any interest
in life.
'4 I love people! 'I love being
with people, and she resents my
even saying,- (,Hello there!" to
people I meet in the supermarket.
She doesn't want to be alone,
yet won't go anywhere. I am
willing to take her, but if she
thinks I may enjoy myself, she
• balks and refuses to go.
So now I am trying the op-
posite and it sometimes- works
because she thinks I will be .
miserable instead of enjoying, it.
HUNG UP
.DEAR HUNG UP
• None of us can live with a
critical, touchy person without
reacting in 'some human' way.
Even if we say never a word,
our stomach muscles tighten up
and sooner or later our nerves
take a beating.
Your mother 'is losing her
grip. This makes her insist all I• * the more that she must have her
way... yet you have a right to
your own life , and it will be good
for her when you hold out.
She is acting childishly, and
to keep your sanity and Rive of
life, you'll have to set up a hew
pattern of behavior. Give her all
the love you can, but hold en to
your own right to live a full
life.
DEAR DORIS
- On the batk of some gum
Wrappers it says gum is made up
of corn 'Syrup, sugar, etc. Does
this imply that gum is fattening?
-WONDERING
DE AR WONDERING'
If you chew from morning until
night, maybe.
Gum itself has no food value,
but the sweetening does, if it is
corn syrup or sugar. I'm not sure
about the "etc." Could be an
artificial sweetener in some
cases, I suppose. Any-food con-
tains calories and makes it con-
tribution to your weight. Some
more than ethers.
CONFIDENTIAL TO MITZI. -
Better talk with his d6ctor. Epi-
leptics can be well-nigh unlive-
able-with, if they are quick-
tempered and unreasonable.
Nowadays most epileptics are on
drugs which keep their seizures
under control, It sounds to me
as if he is not even doing what he
could to help himself.
TO DAVEY BOY - Cheer up!
Just because you have diabetes
you don't have to miss out on all
the fun this summer. There are
.summer carnet for boys and girls
with diabetes. And' hundres of
campers.
Here's ,a spot to have out-of-
doors fun and at the ,sarne time
learn to live with your condition.
A letter to the national office
of The Canadian Diabetic Assoc-
iation, 1491 YongeStreet, Toronto
7, Ontario, will get you all the
details.
DEAR DORIS
- I would like information
about mild brain damage in
children. Can you tell me if
there is a cure for this type of
child?
CONFIDENTIAL TO TROUBLED
-No, my dear, you can't be put
in a reformatory for writing
a letter - .but the father of the
boy-- you 'wrote - it • to did 'get
you in Diddli ' with Morn, didn't
he?
The apology letter to the
parents is a must - but if I
were you I'd give,, up on that
boy. Chalk the wole thing up
to experience and use a little
judgment in writing letters.
You aren't pregnant; why imply
such a thing? It just isn't smart.
