process, agonizing the kids by doing
small chores and putting on a pot of
coffee before they could join her
downstairs – the children often tried
to start the process as early as they
could.
Knowing Tiffany’s tendency to
rise early on Christmas morning,
Morgan and Tyler would sometimes
put her to work, sending her into
Alicia and Kevin’s room in an
attempt to wake them up. “Sending
in the baby,” as Alicia puts it.
While there was always a strong
push to get downstairs to see if Santa
had come (in the Deitner home
Santa didn’t wrap his presents), all
members of the family agree that the
holidays were never about presents.
Alicia, who spends much of her
time volunteering with the local
food bank, said she would just as
soon donate money or gifts to those
who need them more than give gifts
within the family.
When she and Kevin were
younger, she said, gifts were given
around Christmas because they were
needed. “You got a new pair of shoes
at Christmas because you needed
them,” she said.
To help students and readers get in
the Christmas mood, The Citizen
visited North Woods Elementary
School and asked students what they
thought Santa Claus eats for his
Christmas meal.
The answers from Mrs.
Matheson’s Grade 1/2 class were
varied, but one thing is for sure,
Santa eats well.
“Santa has turkey for dinner
because he likes turkey. I don’t know
what else he would eat though. I
think he drinks milk because we all
leave milk out for him.”
Wade Baillie
“He has cookies because everyone
gives him cookies and that’s his
favourite food. They are probably
home-made because the elves would
make them for him. He likes
chocolate chip cookies and raisin
cookies and chocolate milk to go
with them.”
Kylynn Fraser
“Santa would maybe have turkey
because it’s kind of like a Christmas
thing to eat for Christmas dinner. He
also has soup though, like maybe
cracker soup. Then he has an apple
pie for dessert.”
Marco Mirotta
“I think Santa has ham for dinner
and he would have something
around the ham like potatoes. He
doesn’t like his food dry so he would
put water around the potatoes and
ham to make it juicy and he would
drink water as well.”
Payton Piper
“I bet that Santa has present
cookies for dinner. We make them at
home. We make chocolate chip
cookies then put sprinkles you can
eat on them. I know Santa is real
because I saw him eating the
cookies. I saw him breaking the
cookies in half to share with Mrs.
Claus at the fire station when we
were there for a Christmas party. He
likes cookies.”
Matthew Schlosser
“Santa has meat and corn on the
cob. He has beef for the meat. I don’t
know why he eats that, he just does.
For dessert he has ice cream with a
cherry on top.”
Logan Sheppard
“Santa has turkey for dinner
because it’s kind of healthy. The
elves give him food but he doesn’t
eat the elves. He likes turkey, but he
likes ham better, so he has a ham
sandwich for dessert.”
Nicholas White
“We have turkey at home, but
there is never any left so Santa Claus
can’t have our turkey. He has to have
toast with peanut butter. That’s it.
That’s all he gets for dinner. Then he
has Jell-O for dessert. He has the
orange Jell-O because everyone
should get Jello-O.”
Shaylynn Allan-Thorogood
“I think that Santa maybe has
chicken because it’s healthier than
turkey. He would have mashed
potatoes with it and corn. I think
three things are enough for Santa
Claus because he is pretty big and he
has all those cookies for dessert and
cookies while he is giving out
presents.”
Rylieh Bloomfield
“I think Santa has milk and
cookies for Christmas dinner
because he really, really, really,
really likes that. He has chocolate
chip because everyone gives him
that. We give him that and when we
wake up, they are all gone. I don’t
think he eats them all, I think he
takes some of them to have for
dinner on Christmas.”
Tiffany Burrows
“I don’t know what Santa has but I
think he probably should have a
salad. It would have mushrooms,
lettuce, some leaves, red peppers,
green peppers, yellow peppers,
croutons and bacon bits. He would
have a salad because his clothes are
red and a salad is green and together
those are Christmas colours.”
Reed Fischer
“I think Santa would have smoked
duck like my family has. We have
smoked duck and gravy and potatoes
and vegetables. He would have that
too. We also have this salad that’s
yummy with some sugar in it that he
would probably like to. It has
pineapple and marshmallows. It’s so
good. I think that’s what Santa
would like.”
Graham Martin
“Santa would eat chicken because
it’s good. He would have a normal
chicken breast and then have some
milk to drink. I know that he likes
milk so I think he would like that.
He would have chocolate chip and
Christmas cookies for dessert.”
Rylea Inglis-McDonald
“I think Santa would eat meat, but
the only meat he would find is polar
bear meat because he is at the North
Pole. I guess that means he eats
polar bear meat.”
Jack Nicholson
“Maybe Santa eats Kraft Dinner. I
like it. When he goes to the houses
he has cookies and milk, so he
wouldn’t eat that for Christmas
again. He would have Kraft Dinner.
Mrs. Claus would make Kraft
Dinner for him and he would put
ketchup on it and, because it’s
Christmas, he puts hot dogs in.”
Sheridan Smith
“Santa would eat chicken fingers
with french fries for Christmas
dinner and have milk to drink.”
Kayden Bootsman
“For Christmas dinner Santa
would eat a chicken burger with
pickles, mustard and mayo and a
salad with cucumbers.”
J.J. Detzler-Ashley
What’s on the menu?
When asked what Santa Claus would have for his own Christmas dinner, the ideas presented
by the Grade 1/2 class at North Woods Elementary School ran from the sweet to the savoury
to the slightly odd. Back row, from left: Rylieh Bloomfield, Sheridan Smith, Kylynn Fraser,
Rylea McDonald-Inglis, Reed Fischer, Marco Mirotta, Nicholas White and Wade Baillie. Front
