Christmas films dominate December for Sholdices
For Blyth Festival General
Manager Deb Sholdice Christmas
provides the perfect opportunity
to merge one of her favourite
things, spreadsheets, with one
of her family’s favourite
things, Christmas movies.
Sholdice, along with her husband
Mark and children Sam and Sarrah,
have been doing Christmas by the
numbers for years, watching select
Christmas movies every night from
Dec. 1 to Dec. 25.
The list, which exists as both an
actual spreadsheet file and as a more
fluid list in Sholdice’s head, helps
the family decide which movie to
watch and when from the first day of
December.
“The list isn’t necessarily a num-
bered one, but something that makes
sure we don’t watch something too
early,” she said in an interview with
The Citizen. “There are some films
that are early December, others that
are mid- and some others that are
just too good to be watched until
Christmas is right around the corner.
We’re not allowed to watch things
too soon, or else you’ve kind of
ruined the momentum.”
The list can change every year
Sholdice said, as great Christmas
movies are made all the time.
December 1, however, is a known
quantity for the family. The
Christmas season starts that day with
the claymation Rudolph the Nosed
Reindeer television special.
Following that, the earlier weeks
of the month see whichever mem-
bers of the family are home gather
around the family television to
watch some “sappy, one-star
Christmas movies”, according to
Sholdice.
“Those are the kind of ones you
don’t even know the titles of,” she
said. “You can pretty much throw in

The Sholdice clan, including Blyth Festival General
Manager Deb Sholdice, shown above keeping an eye on
everything at the Festival’s office from a lofty perch, enjoys
Christmas movies. The family so adores the seasonal flicks
that Deb has scheduled their entire month around the
movies, right down to a special Christmas Eve celebration.
