Agar, who is the secretary of the Trust, spoke to council at its Nov. 17 meeting of Huron East Council about the many improvements made at the park. The process began when a donation was made in the name of Barbara Box after she passed away. That money was to go towards improvements to the bandshell. The Trust then stepped forward and financially assisted in improving the park. As part of the project, Agar cleaned up the park in the spring (with the assistance of the Seaforth Public School Green Team), removed overgrown plants, refurbished the plant beds, placed new plants around the town’s cenotaph, placed mulch around the park’s trees, sanded and repainted the park benches, purchased new seats for the swings, painted the bandshell building and replaced the bandshell’s deck area, as well as the steps to the deck. In the spring of 2016, Agar said, the roof of the bandshell will be replaced and top soil will be spread to help level the park’s grounds. She added that a plaque celebrating the history of the bandshell will be placed on the building on July 1, 2016 – the day of the park’s grand re-opening. *** Heather McClinchey, a Huron East parent, spoke to council on behalf of the parents of children that attend the Vanastra Day Care. After writing an emotional letter to council, she followed up with a presentation at the Nov. 17 meeting, saying that the day care is a huge asset to the Huron East community and that it’s very important to the families that use it. She also praised the level of care and attention the children receive from those who work at the day care as opposed to other day cares throughout Huron County. In conclusion, she strongly urged council to continue supporting the centre as a municipally-run facility. *** Huron East Council received a presentation from Tracy Birtch of the United Way Perth-Huron and the Social Research and Planning Council and Shaun Joliffe of the Children’s Aid Society Huron-Perth regarding the organization’s report on a living wage for the region. The group has been making the presentation to all lower-tier municipalities, in addition to Huron County Council, asking local politicians to be advocates for the living wage. *** Huron East Fire Chief and Community Emergency Manage- ment Co-ordinator Marty Bedard reported on the sale of several pieces of decommissioned equipment through the GovDeals online auction service. Two items Bedard sold recently were the 1985 GMC fire rescue van, which sold for $3,550 and the 2000 Fermac tractor-loader, which sold for $12,060. *** Huron East Deputy-Mayor Joe Steffler reported on the charitable work being done by the Association of Ontario Roads Supervisors (AORS) after realizing a profit from their recent trade show, held in Exeter. The show, Steffler reported, raised just over $70,300 – the majority of which was reinvested into Huron County charitable organizations. He told council that $28,000 was distributed to the Ontario Student Nutrition Program (with all the funds staying with Huron County schools, both public and Catholic), $10,000 will be donated to Canadian Tire’s Jump Start charity in memory of Roger Cunningham, with all funds to be used in Huron County, $10,000 to the Huron County Christmas Bureau and $2,000 to the Huron County SPCA.
