Teamwork
Walton was the setting for the Maidens of Mayhem mud run on Sunday, which collected girls
hockey teams from all over the region for team-building at the Edge of Walton Challenge
Course. Here, members of the Blyth Brussels Novice team work together to get a tire that’s
bigger than many of them from Point A to Point B. (Jim Brown photo)
Friday marks last Farmers’ Market day for season
As Canadians who enjoy such a
variety of weather, I guess that’s why
it takes up a lot of our thoughts. As I
was considering what to note this
week, the lovely autumn days of last
week came up, then followed
quickly by the rain and cold of the
weekend, but still we are blessed to
have the variety, as well as a never-
ending topic for discussion.
Fall is the time for thinking. A
time to appreciate the life that we
have, a time for thanks-giving. The
weekend is set aside for that main
purpose. A time to stop and see the
wonder that we have. Clean air,
fine water, good food, fine
infrastructure, available health care
and quiet places.
So as you gather with family and
friends to celebrate life, check on the
level of appreciation for the life that
is ours and perhaps take a moment
and think about the other places that
have none of these blessings.
A celebration of Lois van Vliet’s
life was held in the Blyth United
Church on Saturday. Our connection
with Lois started many years ago
when Sheila Richards was helping
our community see what we were
missing. Sheila could see then that
small communities need to work
together not compete to survive. So
Lois was part of the cheerleading
team as the Festival got started and
The Citizen was born.
Getting people organized for a
stated purpose was a skill that I saw
in Lois and Sheila as they helped
moved the mountains that needed
moved to make the Festival and The
Citizen a success. A cheery voice at
the end of the phone told you a job
was in store and most of them were
fun. As you read this, thank God that
Lois saw rural life as important and
gave her time to serve of The Citizen
Board of Directors for many terms.
Last market day on Friday. Last
chance for sausage or a hot dog
outside under a tent with these
friends. The United Church ladies
have your Thanksgiving pies and tea
biscuits ready for your family
gathering, starting at 2 p.m.
The fresh Ontario produce, well
mostly Ontario, that our two vendors
have supplied all season have been
great and I, for one will miss them
greatly. Last chance as well to pick
up a few Christmas gifts of a unique
nature. Hope to see you there.
Happy Thanksgiving, enjoy
your life.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
At the Branch
Skating club fish fry draws 300
By Jo-Ann McDonald
A busy week at Brussels Legion
Branch with five events. First, a fish
fry at the Branch for the Brussels
Figure Skating Club. They had a
great crowd of nearly 300 enjoy the
dinner. Cooking for the Branch were
Comrades Andy Overholt, Mike
Dauphin, Barrie Currie, Murray
Lowe, Scott McDonald, Wayne
Smith, Judy Lee and Jo-Ann
McDonald.
There were 12 tables of players at
euchre. Winners were: fist, Ed and
Marie Stewart, 84; second, Dorothy
Carter and Joann MacDonald, 79;
third, John Brown and Kevin, 74;
lone hands, tied Betty Hulley and
Frank and Lorna Ellis and Ethel
Walker, six; low, Murray Forbes and
Hank Johnston, 42.
The fish fry crew went to Mitchell
on a cold, wet, windy day. A great
job was handled by Glenn Bridge,
Lisa Glanville and Joan, Rick and
Jo-Ann McDonald to feed the 225
people for the Mitchell Hawks
fundraiser.
The Sunday night dance had
nearly 90 enjoy the music of the
John Heaman Band. Mary
Bradshaw, Judy Lee and Jo-Ann
McDonald handled the evening
work.
The last fish fry away was held at
the Howick Fair for the Howick
Legion. Only a small crowd was fed
the fish dinner. Cooking were Scott
McDonald, Ron and Daisy Schmidt,
George Adams, Jo-Ann McDonald
and Mabel Glanville for the Branch.
In The Citizen’s coverage of the
closing of Duff’s United Church in
Walton last week, some information
regarding Rev. Randy Banks was
confused.
In the Oct. 1 issue, Banks was
pictured holding a chair and it was
reported that the chair came from a
church he had assisted in closing
earlier this year.
The chair, in fact, came from his
home church, Mount Vernon United
Church in Brant County, which
closed in 2004.
Banks says he likely had sat in the
chair himself as a child attending
Sunday school. The Citizen
apologizes for the mistake.
Hydrant and Blow-off flushing
will take place through the day
in:
• BRUSSELS during the weeks
of October 13th to 23rd, 2015
The water is safe, however you
may notice cloudy or coloured
water. If you experience
discoloration of water, run a
cold water tap until the water
runs clear. It is recommended to
refrain from doing laundry,
especially whites, on these
dates.
You may also experience
reduced water pressure.
