The Citizen, 2015-09-24, Page 35The 95th Elementary Public School Fair held in Belgrave on Saturday went well despite a few hurdles according to President Margaret Vincent. “Overall, it went rather well,” she said. “Even though we had the rain, it kind of marked a fresh start and a clean slate.” While the grounds were a little more empty due to the event being held on a Saturday instead of the typical Wednesday, Vincent said that the move allowed a different crowd to come, if not a larger one. “We didn’t have as many students out, which we knew was a probability with moving it to the Saturday, but we had more parents, grandparents and community members out,” she said. The parade went well, according to Vincent, despite a little bit of rain. “Things went great for the parade, other than the fact that it started to rain as we started the parade,” she said. “Fortunately, our timing was great and we got inside just before it started to pour.” Vincent said there were some extremely enthusiastic children in the parade who had decorated their bike as well as some very dedicated students who were divided into grades, and included decorated signs, to represent their schools. “It was a smaller parade, but the children that were there had a lot of energy and enthusiasm,” she said. Vincent was also happy to report that Ross Taylor was in attendance. Taylor is the embodiment of the idea that the fair is for all ages as he has attended all 95 of them. Taylor and Elementary School Fair Ambassador Emily Bieman cut a cake to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the fair. Vincent said that a number of past presidents were also in attendance as well as people who had been involved with the school fair board for a number of years. As far as exhibits go, Vincent said that the number of entries in the fair competitions was up and that the Sciensational Sssnakes reptile demonstration was a big hit. “There was a lot of interest in that,” she said. “The kids loved it. “The livestock shows went well and I think that’s the main thing,” she said. “That experience is the big thing.” While things went well this year, Vincent said that the fair would be returning to tradition next year. “We’re going to back to Wednesday next year,” she said. “That’s tradition. We’re moving back to that day and hoping to build new ideas as we look forward to the 100th Elementary School Fair.” Continued from page 35 citing food production, resource extraction, energy generation, clean water and air, and carbon sequestration. But Canada has run down capital invested earlier in rural regions and has allowed community development to erode, the report says. Rural areas have also taken a back seat in policy development. “Fundamentally, we have forgotten to invest in rural areas and small towns,” Lauzon said. “We have work to do, at all levels, if we want a sustainable future for rural Canada in the 21st century.” Challenges in rural Canada include an aging population, workforce shortages and gaps in human and financial capital, says the report. But rural Canada responds in innovative ways to low-cost global competition, and is addressing such issues as sustainability, food security and balancing resource development and economic diversification. Rural communities are re-imagining themselves to fit new aspirations and service needs, and they lead in reconciliation and wealth-sharing with aboriginal communities. “There is a lot to learn from rural Canada,” Lauzon said. “People often forget how rural communities and regions contribute economically and culturally to Canada.” A new experience Tiffany Walden looks a little unsure as to whether she should be happy or terrified at the idea of a snake slithering all over her.
