These falcons were not of the bird species type, but rather a brand of car that Ford put into production back in 1960. The Ontario chapter of the Ford Falcon Club of America chose to make Auburn one of their stops on a week-long Southern Ontario tour to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The Ontario Chapter is the only Canadian chapter, with 29 families serving as members. They began their tour in Oshawa, travelled to Orillia, then Port Elgin where they toured the Bruce Nuclear plant. Their interest in coming to Auburn was to see Bud Chamney’s collection of vintage and classic vehicles which they thoroughly enjoyed. Club President Joe Tatti and his wife Charmaine were excited to tell me how they have always owned a Ford Falcon. Joe shared, “I dated my wife in a Falcon, got married in a Falcon, and brought home our first child in a Falcon.” Though Ford halted production of the Falcon in 1970, on a beautiful day in September, 2015 Auburn enjoyed having a flock of them come to town where their owners ate some lunch, visited for awhile before heading off to St. Mary’s. The group stopped for lunch in Blyth as well, lining the street with their antique vehicles. A flock of antique car fans The Ontario chapter of the Ford Falcon Club of America visited Auburn on Saturday as part of its 20th anniversary celebration. The group of drivers visited Bud Chamney to take in his collection of antique vehicles and automobile paraphernalia. (Mark Royall photo) NEWS FROM AUBURN By Mark Royall Call 519-441-2223 PEOPLE AROUND AUBURN Outdoor spaces are smoke-free You can expect less second-hand smoke at local playgrounds, special events and publicly owned sports fields thanks to the Smoke Free Ontario Act. Changes to the Act came into effect on January 1, 2015. Among other Act changes, it is now illegal: • to smoke on or within 20 metres of children’s playgrounds • to smoke on or within 20 metres of publicly owned sport fields and surfaces. This includes areas for basketball, baseball, soccer or beach volleyball, ice rinks, tennis courts, splash pads and swimming pools. • to smoke in any area where food or drinks are served or sold or offered for consumption. “Non-smoking signs have been provided to the municipalities,” says Patrick Landry, Public Health Inspector. “These signs should be posted at your local public sports field or playground letting you know that these are now non-smoking spaces.” If you have questions about the signs or about these changes to the Act, contact the Huron County Health Unit. Secondhand smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, about 50 of which are known to cause cancer. There is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke. Next week, Auburn’s Walkerburn Club will resume meetings after taking a much-needed summer break. The club will return for its fall season on Sept. 21 with a meeting at the home of Eileen McClinchey. Vera Penfound will serve as the president for the month, while Mag Treanor will head up the program. The club’s last meeting was held in June, meeting at the home of Deanna Snell. Vera Penfound served as president for the month in the absence of the president. Betty Archambault read the minutes of the previous meeting, while Ila Cunningham gave the treasurer’s report. The answer to the roll call was to name your favourite meal. At the meeting, Dorothy Schneider provided members with a very interesting program, while Mag and Deanna served a delicious lunch.
