Warmer weather
helps fair, farmers
What a nice stretch of weather we
had last week. The day of the
Brussels Fall Fair was just
wonderful, but too bad the children
from our local school were unable to
attend. The folks that plan the
educational program for the kids do
a lot of work and only a small group
was able to enjoy their efforts. The
midway was popular on Tuesday
evening and a good crowd was on
hand.
The farmers kept busy with some
hauling manure, some cutting corn
silage, some chisel plowing, some
harvesting white beans and spring
cereal crops and others still working
on harvest equipment getting ready
to work the long hours of harvest.
The familiar faces of Gerald and
Joan Miller will be gone by the time
you read this. They have enjoyed a
month’s holiday around their old
stumping grounds of Brussels. They
spent time visiting family members,
extended relatives, old friends like
George and Fannie Somers, time at
the Threshers Reunion and the
Brussels Fair. Time flies they said
and now it is time to return to their
home in Clairesholm, Alberta. Safe
journey and we hope to see you
again next year.
I forgot to mention last week about
the streets of Brussels being lined
with “old” tractors. A group of 26
antique tractors were driven from
Blyth to Walton to Brussels, where
they stopped to enjoy breakfast.
There were plenty of folks stop to
look at the line up of tractors that
included John Deeres, Fords,
Massey Harris, Allis Chalmers,
McCormick, International and
Oliver. The owners came from
Brussels, Walton, Winthrop,
Seaforth, Kippen, Hensall and Blyth.
The group continued on the way
back to Blyth and the Threshers
Reunion via Belgrave to complete
the morning drive.
Anyone dropping into Braemar for
a visit these days, have plenty of
folks to visit with from the Brussels
area. Bonnie Taylor, Glenn Sellers
and Sharon Warwick are having a
great time with each other and
visiting with many of the folks who
drop in from Brussels.
Congratulations to Greg and
Sylvia Medd who have welcomed a
baby girl to their family. Vanessa
will be welcomed home by big
brother Brycen.
Folks around Brussels will notice
the mural on the side of the Brussels
Foodland looks a little different. It is
different, because it is new! The
company that did the original mural
thought it had faded more than it
should have and decided to replace it
with a new one. It is the same
picture, but it is brighter and clearer
and looks very nice.

Pedalling for Terry
On Sunday, dozens of runners, walkers and cyclists were making their way through the Village
of Brussels as part of the annual Terry Fox Run. For their family, Sophia, front left and Emily,
front right, Burkholder led the way, followed by Bob Thomas, back left, and Amy Burkholder.

PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON
NEWS
FROM WALTON
Congratulations to Sarah
Williamson on her marriage to
Korey Machan on the weekend. The
wedding was held at St. Ambrose
Catholic Church, Brussels and the
catered family dinner was at Sarah
and Korey’s home in Walton. The
reception was held at the Brussels
Legion that was decorated with
flowers, lanterns and burgundy
accents. Sarah’s two sisters, Katie
and Nicole, stood up with her and
Korey’s brother Mark and nephew
Cody were his attendants. Sarah is
the daughter of Tom and Joyce
Williamson, Walton and Korey is the
son of Bob and Theresa Machan of
Blyth.
The Walton Raceway had a two-
day event at the site on the weekend.
Enduro bikes were on site and
racing. A little different than the
motocross bikes as they are not as
noisy and the races are time trials.
They race on the track as well as
through the bush trails and are all
timed. The Walton Raceway is
developing into a multi-function
centre. The Edge of Walton
Challenge course is also still
available for bookings, weather
permitting.
Congratulations to the Van Den
Assem family on Moncrieff Road,
who celebrated a marriage on
Saturday. Dylan and Mary Ann were
happy to witness the marriage of
their daughter Caroline to Richard
Pennings. A lovely service and
reception was enjoyed. The young
couple will reside near Slabtown.
We are happy to hear that Audrey
Hackwell is now back at Huronlea.
We hope she is settling in well.
Our sympathies are expressed to
Julie and John Harrison and family
on the passing of her mother Audrey
Koistinen. She had been a resident at
Huronlea for about three years. She
was originally from Sault Ste. Marie
and leaves to mourn her passing her
children Julie, Phil, Allan and Kittie.
Our condolences to all.
Congratulations to Allan and
Nancy (Knight) Walker on
celebrating their 40th wedding
anniversary on the weekend. They
held a barbecue for the many family,
friends and neighbours to help
celebrate the occasion. The Walkers
had three sons, Michael, Chris and
Jason. Congrats to them!
Our get well wishes go to Mary
Humphries at this time as she is in
hospital in Clinton. We hope she can
soon return to Huronlea.
It is nice to hear that Henry
Grobbink is home from hospital and
we hope he is feeling better.
It was a breezy afternoon on
Saturday for the cliff-side wedding
of Cindy Stevenson and Cory Orth
in Goderich. Cindy is the daughter
of Bill and Carol Stevenson of
Brussels. Following the wedding,
the reception was held at the home
farm of her parents, Bill and Carol.
It was a lovely evening.
Congratulations to the couple.
The Brussels/Walton ladies slo
pitch league held its year-end
tournament on the weekend. At
times the weather wasn’t the best,
but the ladies continued play and
crowned the Brussels RBI team the
“A” champs for the year. The
Monkton team, Lavern’s Ladies,
claimed the “B” title. As usual,
members of the community would
see some unusually dressed
characters wandering the streets
during the day. It has been the
practice to dress up for the
tournament to add a little fun to the
day. This year, costume ideas
included trolls, Blue Jays,
superheroes, SWAT Team,
bicyclist – “ridin’ for the Sista”
promoting awareness of sharing the
road with cyclist, kittens and bank
robbers to name a few. It was a great
day and it was wonderful to see so
many teams around for the final
games to cheer on the teams. Great
year everyone!
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Matthew Ryan, Emma
Strome, Brittany Holmes, Ben
Driscoll, Heather Kelso, Bruce
Whitmore, MacKenzie Dalton,
Chrissy Warwick, Mike Boven,
