Ask A Financial Advisor
Why Do You Need Power of Attorneys?
Do you have arrangements in place for someone to handle your financial and medical
affairs if you become sick or incapacitated?
If not, talk to your lawyer about powers of attorney for property and personal care.
Power of attorney for property is a legal document that allows a person or institution
you choose to manage your finances when you can't.
Power of attorney for personal care gives someone the right to make medical
decisions on your behalf. When you're incapacitated by illness or injury you won't be
able to direct your own medical care.
It's not difficult to set up powers of attorney. Your lawyer can prepare the necessary
documents. But before you take that step, think about the instructions to be included
and to whom powers of attorney will be assigned.
For finances, make sure the person you appoint has the capability, time and desire to
manage your financial affairs. For personal care, consider your spouse or other close
family member. This should be someone who knows you and your wishes well.

Market days coming to a close in Brussels
New beginnings was the tone
offered to folks who attended
worship at Brussels United on
Sunday. Sunday school got started
with Julie Harrison offering the kids
the creation story and the events that
needed coloured over that first seven
days. Rev. Gary had a new haircut
and Jacoby Noble brought his
parents for this baptism. Special
events and new things is a good
reason for family and friends to
gather, to celebrate. The Nobles and
the Lowes are out in full force to see
Jacoby, Beckett, Mike and Nicole
affirm their faith before the
congregation. And of course Jacoby
took in all the love in his sweet
serene way.
I’ve been educated this week on
the role of an arborist. Mary Ann
Thompson and Joan Bernard are
pretty proud of Kali, who is the
female champion for the Prairie
Chapter Climbing Competition. That
means she reigns for Alberta,
Saskatchewan and Manitoba at
climbing and fixing trees.
Arborist Kali Alcorn went to
school in Niagara and Olds, Alberta
to get her papers to properly care for
trees. The life, health and death of
specific trees is the work of a
certified arborist. Standards are set
by the International Society of
Arborists and Kali belongs. To be
the champion, Kali got the top
scores in five events which mimic
her daily work. We’re aware of first
aid and firefighter competitions
around here, so this is the same deal,
except she’s doing it up a tree; a
large one.
Throwline, speed climb, secure
footlock, work climb and aerial
rescue were the categories that Kali
came out best on Saturday, letting
her try for the Masters on Sunday.
Mama, Mary Ann watched the
action in Winnipeg and could tell
you all that is involved in each
segment. Kali won the Master’s
Challenge, by doing the required
deeds, removing her equipment, and
hitting the ground in 35 minutes. Oh
my, just getting up the tree would be
a challenge for most of us. Anyway,
we know a master arborist who is
now ready to hit San Antonia,
Texas in April for the Internationals.
The best part for Kali – she
won a new chainsaw. Way to go
Kali!
Thirty-five years, imagine that the
grit and determination of one
humble teen could move a nation, to
see the pain of others and then do
something. Terry Fox is our hero.
Each person has a story that goes
back to the actions of this lad and
true to his personality, the Terry Fox
Foundation continues to serve his
values. The Brussels community
remains true to this cause and so the
walk/run was organized once again
by our good folks who see beyond
themselves. Terry would be pleased.
The market days are closing in
fast. Thanksgiving weekend is the
last one for this year. Pop in for
many good things. The United
Church folks will be having a bake
sale that last day, so you can get your
treats to share with your family.By Betty

NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
Swinging
The midway returned to the annual Brussels Fall Fair last Tuesday and Wednesday after a
hiatus of several years. This year’s midway offering included rides, games of skill and chance
and the classic snack booth offering everything from cotton candy to caramel corn. Shown
above are some local children enjoying the swing ride. (Denny Scott photo)

It was a more normal week at the
Brussels Legion Branch with the
Cadets meeting Tuesday evening
and the Brussels Pipe Band
practising Thursday evening. The
branch had an information booth at
the Brussels Fall Fair and Comrades
Cecil Moore and Glenn Bridge
manned the table.
The Branch was the venue for the
wedding reception for Korey
Machan and Sarah Williamson on
Saturday evening. Congratulations
to the couple. The late lunch was
prepared by Comrades Judy Lee, Jo-
Ann McDonald, Mary Bradshaw,
Nanci Ducharme and Danielle
Ducharme.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 11 tables of players. Winners
were: high, Joann MacDonald and
Dorothy Carter, 80; second, Alma
Finnigan and friend Nancy, 76;
third, Flo and Marilyn, 74; low,
Mary Bell and Kay Hesselwood, 43;
lone hands, Lois and Millie Johnson,
seven.
A lovely day was had by Comrade
Mabel Glanville and guest Wilda
Higgins when they travelled to
Parkwood Hospital in London on
Saturday. They attended the 26th
Zone C-1 variety show presented for
the veterans by members of the
Branches throughout the zone. The
entertainment included singing and
playing and jokes. Gift bags were
prepared by all the Branches for the
residents and they all go back to
their rooms with one. Extras are
given out throughout the year.
Thanks to Comrade Mabel for
purchasing and preparing the bags.
Comrade Mabel and Branch
member Eric Ross (and Zone
Commander for C-1) presented our
Branch adopted vet, Gordon
Cattermole, a resident at Parkwood,
with a birthday gift while there.
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd of over 80 people
enjoying the great music of The Tri
Country band. The crowd enjoyed
the lunch prepared by Judy Lee,
Mabel Glanville and Jo-Ann
McDonald. There were many new
faces were in the crowd for the
evening.
