Garratt takes home fiddling crown at reunion
Continued from page 1
school teachers being in a work-to-
rule situation, no field trips could be
scheduled to the event which usually
sees busloads of children from
Maitland River Elementary School
and Hullett Central Public School in
attendance.
She said there were fewer
children, but it wasn’t as big a
problem as it could have been. Many
parents and grandparents brought
their families out.
On a sadder note, McBride said
that Papa’s Barnyard, run by George
Townsend, was part of the reunion
for the last time.
“People love that place,” she said.
“The kids get to be hands on. People
were aware it was the last year for
the event and it will be missed. We
will have to find someone to cover
that space because the kids love that
and have a ball there.”
Entertainment co-ordinator
Gladys Van Egmond echoed
McBride’s sentiment about the
music, saying that it was the best
year ever for some parts of the
program.
“We had a wonderful year for the
step dancing competition,” she said.
“This was the best program we have
ever produced. The step dancing was
top notch.”
The step dance competition, which
took place Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at
Shed 3 on the campground, was
judged by Kelsey Mighton and
Jaime McCormack, both of Hanover.
Winners included: nine-years-old
and under, Joclynn Jepson of
Stratford; 12-years-old and under,
Clara Roth of Tavistock; 18-years-
old and under, Maria Peppler of
Orangeville; 19-years-old and over,
Miranda DeWetering of Stratford;
open class, Kyle Waymouth of
Stratford; junior group, The
ElectricCALL STORM from
Stratford and Open Group, Reel
Deal from Orangeville.
“We had 26 individual contestants,
which is up nine from last year,” Van
Egmond said. “We also had five
groups, which is up three from last
year.”
The host fiddler for the event was
Dan Mighton from Hanover who
also judged the fiddle contest and the
host pianist was Paul Lemelin from
Sudbury.
The fiddle competition was judged
by Mighton and Ian Hamilton from
Cobden. There were 19 contestants,
slightly down from last year.
Winners were: nine-years-old and
under, Gideon Garratt of Blyth; 12-
years-old and under, Kaitlyn Wright
of West Montrose; 18-years-old and
under, Brooklyn Hewton of Miller
Lake; 19- to 49-years-old, Will
Wright of West Montrose; 50- to 69-
years-old, Al Widmeyer of
Kitchener; 70-years-old and up, Ken
Cook of Dorchester and open class,
Ashley Giles of St. Mary’s.
The fiddle workshop, held on
Thursday night before the reunion,
brought out 32 fiddlers and
celebrated its 26th anniversary this
year.

were as follows:

Visiting the barnyard
In this, the last year for Papa’s Barnyard at the annual
Thresher Reunion, George Davidson was one of the many
children who found enjoyment in the miniature farm, which
was made available as part of the barnyard. (Denny Scott
