How Can I Help Fund My Grandchild’s Education?
Are you a grandparent who wants to help out with your grandchild's education
costs?
Contributing to a Registered Education Savings Plan for your grandchild is the best
approach. But caution may be in order.
For one thing, the child's parents may have already opened an RESP. Starting
another one can complicate the issue. In this case it may be best to gift money to
the child's parents, who will then contribute to an existing RESP.
If you decide to open a separate plan for a grandchild, make sure total contributions
to all plans don't exceed allowed limits for the child. And be aware that if the child
doesn't attend a post-secondary institution, you could run into tax problems. Under
certain circumstances the growth in the plan can be rolled into an RRSP as a
contribution, but grandparents may be past RRSP age.

Terry Fox Run this Sunday
The Brussels Terry Fox Run is set
for Sept. 20 and will officially start
at 10 a.m. at the Brussels Optimist
Clubhouse.
The run marks the 35th
anniversary of Fox’s first run.
In 1980, the Marathon of Hope
started with Terry Fox in St. John’s,
Newfoundland with his goal of
running across Canada.
Unfortunately Fox’s run was cut
short when cancer, which had
already cost him most of his right
leg, was discovered in his lungs after
143 days of running. His run ended
just outside of Thunder Bay. On June
28, 1981 Fox passed away from
complications with the cancer.
To date, according to The Terry
Fox Foundation, more than $650
million has been raised through
activities like the Terry Fox run for
cancer research.
Brussels organizer Ron Clarkson
said that this year’s event is
important because of the
anniversary.
“In my mind, Terry Fox was the
original,” he said. “He was the first
one to do anything like that and try
to go across Canada for a cause like
that.”
He said that the Brussels
Optimists and Lions Club, which co-
host the event, hope to raise between
$6,000 and $7,500 for the
foundation this year. He said he
would really like hit to the higher
estimate because the event raised
less than he would have liked last
year.
“We have two routes, the five-mile
block outside of town and the in-
town run,” he said. “A lot of people
use the in-town run, which is marked
as the Terry Fox Run, while the five-
mile run is marked with pylons.”
Clarkson said that the run brings
out a strong core group every year
and that he hopes new people will
come and participate.
“People can show up, register and
bring in their pledge sheets,” he said.
“They go for the walk, come back,
and we have hot dogs and water and
pop, as well as water to take on the
walk if they like.”
Donation sheets are available at
local merchants, Clarkson said. He
encouraged everyone to participate,
even if it’s just someone pledging for
themself or making a donation.
“You also don’t have to walk if
you don’t want to,” he said. “A lot of
people just do a personal donation
which is okay, but seeking pledges
helps to spread the word about it.”
Clarkson said the event is a
relaxed one, with no speakers or
grand launch ceremony.
The event is family-focused,
according to Clarkson, who said that
many of the children have already
started a Terry Fox Run program
through local schools.
“We do it for the families and we
have a lot of families come with their
spouses and their kids,” he said.
“Sometimes we even have the
grandparents come out with the
children.”
