UCW celebrates ‘last supper’
The Walton UCW held a “last
supper” meeting to enjoy good
food, good fellowship and
memories of days gone by.
Organized by Gloria Wilbee,
Heidi McClure and Melva Fraser,
there were 26 ladies toenjoy the
delicious meal provided by High
Creek Catering. A nice display of
pictures was displayed for all to
see during the evening.
Heidi McClure read a brief
history of the formation of the
UCW, which held its inaugural
meeting in January, 1962. There
were 38 ladies present the night
of the meeting with 72 names
placed on the membership role. It
was with great pleasure that there
was one lady present at the
meeting from the original
inaugural meeting held in 1962.
Pauline Bennett was introduced
and presented with a gift of
flowers from the UCW. The
original charter list of members
was on display and there are five
ladies still living and they
included Pauline, Jean Bewley,
Melva Fraser, Marjory Fraser and
Margery Huether. Melva Fraser is
still an active member of the
UCW and helped organize the
night’s meeting and was
presented with flowers by Gloria
and Heidi. Long-time members
of the UCW present for at least
50 years included Olene Dennis,
Marie McGavin, Marg Bennett,
Pearl McCallum, Barb Fritz and
Karen Hoegy and the ladies were
recognized for their attendance.
Gloria Wilbee sang a hymn and
many joined in with the chorus.
A re-enactment of the
inaugural meeting was presented
by eight members of the UCW,
with a few adaptions. Portraying
the Rev. Higgenbotham was
Gloria Wilbee, the first president
of the UCW Mrs. Nelson Reid by
Teresa Baan, Secretary Mrs. Ron
Bennett by Dianne McCallum,
pianist Mrs. Martin Baan by
Glenda Morrison, soloist Mrs.
Herb Travis by Marie McGavin,
treasurer Mrs. Leona McDonald
by Jo-Ann McDonald, members
making motions Mrs. W. (Jen)
Turnbull by Barb Fritz, Mrs.
Gordon McGavin by Melva
Fraser and Mrs. Emerson
Mitchell by Heidi McClure. It
was a delightful part of the
program and the ladies played
their parts with accessories from
the 1960s of hats and gloves.
Following the short play,
members were asked if they
wished to share any memories
from the past days of UCW and a
few ladies spoke of the good old
days working in the kitchen and
the trials and successes of the
famous turkey supper. A very
nice evening was enjoyed by all
and pictures were taken to add to
the history book of Duff’s United
Church Women of Walton.
The ladies of the UCW also
catered to two Blyth Festival
dinners last week. The first was
on Friday evening with a group of
13 enjoying the intimate dinner of
roast beef. Working for the UCW
were Jo-Ann McDonald, Judy
Lee and Val Pethick. The second
dinner was on Saturday evening
with another disappointing crowd
of 22. This meal was catered by
Betty McCallum, Marion
Godkin, Olene Dennis and Patty
Banks. Getting help for the
functions seemed to be a
challenge, but the same old, same
old ladies again came through to
help at the church. There is only
one more planned function for the
final service of the church and
hopefully everyone will pitch in
and make it a success. Fruit
breads and muffins are going to
be needed, so make plans to bake
for that day or make ahead! Folks
wishing to speak are asked to
contact Patty Banks soon.

Condolences offered to families
Well, the first week of school is
over and so is the excitement of
seeing classmates and new
teachers. There are a few new
routines to learn, reminders of the
old rules still stand and how far
can they push before they are in
trouble. It doesn’t take long for
the children to get back into
routine. The children report
having great summer holidays
with swimming lessons, camping
trips, holidays at grandma’s
house, trips to visit other relatives
and enjoying playing on a sports
team.
Our prayers and condolences
go to the Jutzi family on the
passing of Gerry Jutzi. He will be
lovingly missed by his wife Julie
and children Kendall and
husband Andrew and son Travis.
He will be missed by his mother
Grace Jutzi and brothers Jim and
Neil and their families. He will be
missed by all.
Gerry was a truck driver with
his father’s company for many
years before making his own way
with other companies. He was a
quiet man and his love of his
family gave him the greatest joy.
He always greeted folks with a
smile and pleasant word. Our
sympathies to his family and
friends.
The Walton Hall was the venue
for the Brussels Cadet Corps to
hold its field training exercise
weekend. They camped outside in
tents and used the hall for
cooking and inside exercises
and in case of
inclement weather.
Our get well wished go out to
Henry Grobbink and Audrey
Hackwell, who are both patients
in hospital at this time.
Congratulations to Steve and
Kristi (Warwick) Carnochan who
have welcomed twin boys to their
family. Simon and Griffin joined
two big brothers to make a full
house of boys! They will be
welcomed home by Cole and
Reed when they are ready to
come home. Proud grandparents
are Glenn and Marianne Warwick
and Sharon Carnochan.
The Walton Raceway had a
busy weekend with an open
practice on Saturday and then the
Thames Valley Riders held a race
day at the track. They had the
biggest turnout of the year for the
group and a very successful day.
Our sympathies are extended to
the Thamer family on the passing
of John Thamer. He was the
father of two sons, Tony and
Jason, and the beloved brother of
Shirley, Pauline, Judy and Ruthie.
Our condolences to all.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Karen Carter,
Nancy Gillis, Jaden Shortreed,
Lisa Stevenson, Brian Alcock,

Frying it up
The Brussels Legion Branch fish fry squad was busy
on Saturday providing a meal out for residents of the
village. Shown dipping and frying the fish are Ron
Schmidt, left, and Sandra Josling. (Denny Scott photo)
