The Citizen, 2015-09-17, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2015. Marking the route Local Knights of Columbus members, shown in their dress uniforms, were part of a special centennial celebration at St. Ambrose Catholic Cemetery south of Brussels on Sunday. Approximately 130 people came out to honour those interred at St. Ambrose and at other cemeteries in the area. (Denny Scott photo) Elizabeth made it, that’s Queen Elizabeth the Second. She hit the mark last week as the longest reigning monarch of the British Empire. Officially on Sept. 9 she has out-reigned Queen Victoria in length of service and perhaps more important, she shines with personality, common sense and good relationships. As part of Canada’s history, Elizabeth’s reign has had a good influence on us. Her example of quiet dignity, commitment to service and knowledge of issues has made her a pleasure to observe these 61- plus years. Starting with weekly tea and consultations with Winston Churchill, she has heard, shared and guided the next 14 Prime Ministers of the British empire. Imagine the stories she could tell, but only to dear Philip. With her first love Philip from Greece, as companion and guide, as the world changed she was able to keep abreast with the realities, and in her dignified way, guided history. The reign of countries away from the British Isles needed tact and knowledge as co-operation and shifts of power were handled in many different ways over the years to celebrate the Commonwealth. Oh Elizabeth, you have been a great example of dignified service. Goodbye Gerry Jutzi. Frederick Street is sad again this week as they dealt with the realities of life and death and helped Julie, Kendall and Travis celebrate a life well lived at Gerry’s funeral on Saturday. Death is always a surprise, but when lives are well lived and relationships important, then life is celebrated. Be sure to tell Julie your Gerry stories – the good ones of course. It’s definitely fall when the Thresher Reunion is over and the Brussels Fall Fair is ready to roll, all the planning is done, the work complete, or nearly and weather has the final say. For endeavours like these, the farmers’ way of thinking has sustained both these historic events as community changes and weather of the week, do not determine the long-term success and their very reason for being. Well done, oh faithful volunteers. Autumn brings with it many, many opportunities to eat away from home. Suppers of every kind are being prepared, pork, chicken, turkey, beef and schnitzel, to name a few, have dates set. So check them out, each organization would love to feed you this fall. Wedding anniversaries of any number are to be celebrated, but 60 seems to be pretty special. George and Shirley (Machan) Wheeler dug out the wedding clothes, the photos and the memories as they shared a fun afternoon with family and friends. The United Church was decorated to celebrate the years past and the history of George and Shirley and their part as sports fans, skating championship parents, farmers, crafters and good friends in our community. Congratulations to the Wheelers. Bye now, Betty G.W. At the Branch Cadets return with a few new faces By Jo-Ann McDonald The start of September and the new school year means the start of the new Cadet year. There were lots of last year’s Cadets returning and even a new face or two. They had a good first night at the Brussels Legion Branch for their meeting and the preparation began for the weekend’s activities. The Cadets spent the weekend at the Walton Hall for a field training exercise. They were able to pitch tents on the adjoining property and spent time learning their assignments at different locations on the property and at the ball park. Meals were held inside the hall and a campfire was enjoyed. They report a good weekend. The Branch held a fish fry and had a very small crowd. The outside help included Lisa Glanville, Joan Warner, Ron Schmidt, Deb Cann and Sandra Josling. The inside help included Judy Lee, Mary Bradshaw, Daisy Schmidt and Glenn and Jean Bridge. The annual zone visitation by the zone and deputy zone commanders is slated for Sept. 22. Members are invited to attend and catch up with what has been happening at the Branch over the summer. We need to have more members to become interested in the “running” of the Branch. Attending the general meetings can be the first step in learning about how the Branch operates. A reminder to veterans wishing to have a visit with the Provincial Service Officer Kim Dolan: they are asked to contact Branch Service Officer Mabel Glanville by Oct. 9 to arrange an appointment.
